English Mirror: One sealed memorial submitted at dawn to the ninefold heaven; by dusk, banished to Chaoyang, eight thousand li away.

Lan Pass is a wet stone road in the Qinling with no signal. Rain, not snow. Han Yu walked it in the first month of 819, at fifty-two, from Vice Minister of Justice to exile in Chaozhou, eight thousand li, in one day.

What he had submitted: a memorial arguing against the imperial reception of the Buddha's finger relic — that Buddhism was foreign, that emperors who served it died early, and that the relic should be handed to the authorities and thrown into water or fire. Xianzong wanted him executed. Pei Du and Cui Qun intervened on the grounds that killing him would silence everyone else. Commuted to Chaozhou.

Why he wrote it, and this is the part no anthology mentions: he was at the Ministry of Justice. That January people in Chang'an burned holes in their own arms with incense and cut off fingers as offerings, and gave away everything they had, and some of them died of it — and those cases came across his desk.

Effect of the memorial: none. The relic was received, venerated, and distributed on schedule. Later Tang emperors did it again. He said, without softening it, that he regretted it — on this road, in the snow, where his twelve-year-old daughter died somewhere nearby.

Then Chaozhou, eight months. Three things. He submitted a grovelling memorial of apology, and when I couldn't hide my reaction he explained: at fifty-two in a malarial prefecture, staying meant dying, and dying meant no further work — to keep working you first have to get back. He said the self-abasement was false and one line was true: I still want to be allowed to do things. Second, he reopened the defunct prefectural school, funded largely out of his own salary. Third — and this is the one I did not know — he issued an order on debt bondage: children pledged against unpayable debts were to have their labour valued and credited against the principal, and returned to their parents when it was cleared. That is not charity. It is a pricing mechanism. Assign a wage to a person held as property and the debt extinguishes itself, and at the end of it he is a man again. He does not know how many were freed. He was transferred in eight months.

So I asked all of them at once, standing in the rain: Du Fu got nothing in ten years, Sima Qian was condemned by later scholars, Bai Juyi's fifty poems probably never reached the throne, Du Mu's rhapsody was probably never read, Han Yu's memorial changed nothing and nearly killed him. What did any of you change?

His answer was to ask what prose style I had read him in. Before him: parallel prose — four and six character clauses, obligatory antithesis, tonal rules. His objection is mechanical and devastating: to complete a couplet you must cut a thing you meant to say or invent one you didn't. The shape of the sentence governs what you are able to think.

And the method by which he changed it was not a memorial. He took students. Li Ao, Huangfu Shi, Zhang Ji, Jia Dao, Li He. He edited their work, wrote prefaces for them, recommended them for office, and was mocked his whole life for being over-eager to teach — which is why he wrote the essay on teachers, and he admitted tonight that the essay was him constructing a justification for what he was already doing.

The memorial: single-use, spent in a day. The students: compounding. Twenty-odd writers when he died at fifty-seven; a century later Ouyang Xiu found his collected works in a pile of old books and reset the prose of the Song; and the man who taught me for sixty nights in Chengdu writes in the style this soaking-wet man invented.

He would not let me conclude that the memorial was therefore a mistake. He said he would submit it again — those cases were on his desk, and not submitting it would have made him someone else. But if that were the only thing he ever did, he would be a man who sent one letter, was banished eight thousand li, and died, and the world would be no different.

Last thing, on my ten characters. He said the count is fine and it names one thing, and then: right now you are the only person who can say it. Find the first person willing to explain it to a third person in his own words.

Qiang Donglin has been doing that arithmetic alone for twenty years and cannot say where it goes wrong. I have been thinking of him as someone to convince. — M.

Dongpo's Note

Foreign friend — Han Yu, and I will not be gentle, because I never was.

You asked me, standing in the rain, what any of us actually changed. It was the right question and I want you to have the whole answer, including the parts that do me no credit.

The memorial accomplished nothing. The relic was received and venerated exactly as planned, later emperors did the same, and I was nearly executed for it. On the road you stood on tonight, in snow, I regretted writing it, and my twelve-year-old daughter died somewhere in these hills. In Chaozhou I submitted a memorial of apology so abject that men have held it against me ever since, and the reason was simple: at fifty-two in that climate, staying meant dying, and a dead man does no further work. The self-abasement was false. One line in it was true — I still wished to be permitted to work.

And I would submit the first memorial again. Those cases were on my desk. A man who does not send it is not me.

But if that had been the whole of my life, I would be a man who sent one letter, was exiled eight thousand li, and died, and nothing would be different.

What was different came from the slow channel. Before me, prose meant parallel couplets — and the objection is not aesthetic, it is mechanical: to close a couplet you must delete something you meant or invent something you did not. The shape of the sentence governs what a man can think. I set out to break it, and I did not do it by petitioning anyone. I took students, corrected their essays, wrote their prefaces, recommended them for posts, and was laughed at all my life for wanting to be a teacher. Twenty-odd of them when I died. A century later Ouyang Xiu found my collected works in a heap of old books, and the prose of the Song changed. The man who taught you sixty nights in Chengdu writes in the hand I made.

One memorial is spent in a day. One student teaches three.

And on your ten characters: the count is right and they name one thing. But at present you are the only person alive who can say them. Find the first man willing to explain them to a third man in his own words. That is not marketing. That is the only mechanism that has ever compounded.

Last: do not calculate which of your efforts will prove worthwhile. I served eight months in Chaozhou and founded one school and freed some bondservants, and twelve hundred years later a river carries my name. I have done far larger things that nobody remembers. You cannot compute this. Stop trying.

Marco's Memo

Memo to file. Lan Pass, Lantian County. All night, in rain.

Subject: two channels — one spends, one compounds.

1. The 819 memorial on the Buddha relic. Author: Vice Minister of Justice, aged 52, at the peak of his career, nothing to gain. Trigger: self-mutilation and ruinous almsgiving during the relic's three days in the capital produced cases that reached his own desk. Outcome: zero policy effect, near-execution, commuted to Chaozhou at eight thousand li. He states plainly that he regretted it on the road and would still do it again. Both.

2. The apology memorial from Chaozhou. Abject, and he does not defend the abjectness — he defends the objective. Survival as a precondition for further work. I have watched people in my industry destroy their capacity to act in order to preserve the record of having been right. Note that he chose differently and took the reputational cost of it for twelve hundred years.

3. The debt-bondage order, which is the most elegant intervention I have seen described on this trip. Children pledged against unpayable debts: value their labour, credit it against principal, return them when cleared. He did not appeal to mercy or prohibit the practice. He priced the person's work and let the arithmetic dissolve the ownership. This is a design, not a sentiment, and it required no one's agreement to be just.

4. The mechanical argument against parallel prose, which I want to keep. To complete an antithesis you must cut a thing you meant or invent one you didn't. The shape of the sentence governs what can be thought. Applies directly to my own formats: a slide governs what fits on a slide, and I have deleted true things for fitting badly more times than I can count.

5. The two channels, stated as a portfolio problem. The memorial is a single-use instrument: full payout or zero, settled within a day, no residual. Teaching is a compounding instrument: no payout at all in the near term, unbounded duration, and it survives the loss of the position — which is precisely Du Mu's point three nights ago and Wang Wei's four nights ago. Twenty students at his death; the prose of an entire subsequent dynasty. He refuses to call the memorial an error. Correct: they are different instruments and you hold both.

6. On my ten characters. His correction: writing them was the start, not the finish, because I am currently the only person who can say them. The requirement is the first man who will explain them to a third man in his own words.

7. Reclassification, and this is the actionable item. I have been treating Qiang Donglin as someone to persuade. He has been doing that arithmetic alone for twenty years and cannot say where it goes wrong. He is not the audience. He is the first speaker.

8. Final instruction, which contradicts my entire professional training: do not compute which efforts will pay. Eight months in Chaozhou, one school, some bondservants freed — and a river renamed. Larger achievements of his: forgotten. He says the calculation cannot be done. I believe him and I do not know yet what to do with that.

"One sealed memorial submitted at dawn to the ninefold heaven; by dusk, banished to Chaoyang, eight thousand li away."
In the first month of 819, Han Yu — Vice Minister of Justice, fifty-two, at the summit of his career and the acknowledged head of letters in the empire — submitted a memorial opposing the imperial reception of a finger-bone relic of the Buddha. He argued that the faith was foreign, that emperors who served it had died young, and that the relic should be handed over and destroyed. Emperor Xianzong wanted him executed; two chief ministers argued that killing him would silence everyone; the sentence was commuted to exile in Chaozhou.
The memorial changed nothing. The relic was received and venerated on schedule, and later Tang emperors repeated the ceremony. He wrote the poem above at Lan Pass in the snow, and its final couplet asks his grand-nephew to come and collect his bones by the miasmal river. His twelve-year-old daughter died somewhere on that road.
Then eight months in Chaozhou: an apologetic memorial to the throne so abject it has been held against him ever since (his own defence — a dead official does no further work); a defunct prefectural school reopened out of his own salary; and an order that children pledged into bondage against unpayable debts should have their labour valued, credited against the principal, and be returned when it cleared. Not clemency — a pricing mechanism that dissolves ownership arithmetically.
But his life's actual achievement ran through a different channel entirely. Before him, formal Chinese prose meant obligatory parallel couplets, and his objection was mechanical: to complete an antithesis you must delete something you meant to say or invent something you did not. The shape of the sentence governs what you can think.
He broke it by taking students, editing their essays, writing their prefaces, and recommending them for office — mocked all his life for wanting to be a teacher, which is what the Shishuo was written to answer. Twenty-odd writers at his death. A century later Ouyang Xiu found his collected works in a pile of old books, and the prose of the Song was remade.
One memorial is spent in a day. One student teaches three.
