English Mirror: The men of Qin had no leisure to grieve for themselves; later ages grieved for them. But later ages grieve without learning — and so they leave still later ages to grieve for them in turn.
The palace does not exist. It never did.
Two hours after midnight, on a rammed-earth platform in the Xi'an-Xianyang new district — 1,200 metres long, 400 wide, big enough that a phone torch finds no edge. That is Epang Palace. Foundation only. No burn layer. Archaeologists went over it for years: the platform was laid, the columns were never raised. Xiang Yu burned the Xianyang palace, which is where Qin Shi Huang actually lived. Epang was never burned because there was nothing on it to burn.
Du Mu wrote the most famous description in Chinese literature of a building that was never built. He was twenty-three, in Luoyang, had never been here, and derived the whole thing from two numbers in a history book. He said so without embarrassment. He also said it did not matter, and I did not understand why until he made me recite the final paragraph.
The entire rhapsody exists to carry one sentence: the men of Qin had no leisure to grieve for themselves; later ages grieve for them; and later ages grieve without learning, and so leave still later ages to grieve for them in turn. Every gorgeous line about hairpins and green clouds is scaffolding to get a sixteen-year-old emperor as far as that.
It didn't work. Jingzong was building palaces in 825 and was murdered in his own residence in 826, aged eighteen, with the work still unfinished. Du Mu doubts he ever read it — a newly-passed examinee's essay does not reach a throne.
So I asked why he wrote it. Answer, after a long silence: because it was the only thing I could do.
Then the part that reorganised something in me. His real achievements needed a chair: he improved waterworks as prefect of Huangzhou, restored a shrine in Chizhou, useful and modest work, all of it contingent on holding the post. His canal was rerouted within thirty years. The essay has not had a character changed in eleven hundred years, and it required no office, no power, and — as it turns out — no reader at the top. It only required that someone copy it.
Which sits exactly against Wang Wei last night. Wang: what can kill you and everything you own may be the same object. Du Mu: everything you can only do from a position vanishes with the position. What survives is what needed no permission.
And then he took my own conclusion away from me before I could get comfortable in it. I said: a thing that fails can still leave something behind, and what it leaves may travel further than the thing would have. He said that sentence is one of the most convenient lies available to a man who did not finish. The test: was the surviving thing what you set out to leave, or is it merely what you found in your hands afterward? He wanted the boy to stop building. He wanted the result. The immortality was an accident. Aim at finishing. What remains if you don't is not your decision to make in advance. — M.
Dongpo's Note
Foreign friend — Du Mu writing, and briefly, because it is nearly dawn and I do not hold up well in daylight.
I wrote the most quoted description of a palace in our language about a palace that was never built. I was twenty-three, I had never stood where you stood tonight, and I constructed the whole thing out of two figures in a history: five hundred paces east to west, room on the platform for ten thousand men. The columns were never raised. There is no burn layer. Xiang Yu burned Xianyang, where the Emperor actually slept.
None of which weakens the piece, because the piece was never a description. It was a petition with ornament on the front. Every line about green clouds of hair and scattered hairpins exists to carry a reader as far as the last sentence: later ages grieve without learning, and so leave still later ages to grieve for them. That is the whole cargo. The rest is packaging, and I packaged it richly because a sixteen-year-old emperor building palaces was not going to read a plain memorial.
He almost certainly never read it either way, and he was murdered the following winter with his own construction still going. So: it failed at what I sent it to do.
Here is what I want you to take, and it is not consolation. Everything I actually accomplished required a chair — the waterworks at Huangzhou, the shrine at Chizhou. Useful, small, and gone the moment I was transferred. My canal was rerouted within thirty years. The essay needed no office, no favour, and no reader at court. It needed only for someone to copy it, and someone did, for eleven hundred years.
But do not turn that into the sentence you were reaching for tonight. "It failed and yet left something" is the most comfortable lie available to a man who did not finish. The honest test is whether the surviving thing is what you aimed at, or merely what you found in your hands afterward. I aimed at stopping a boy from building. I missed. That the words outlived me was an accident and none of my doing. Aim at finishing. Leave the accident to heaven.
Marco's Memo
Memo to file. 01:00–05:40, Epang Palace foundation platform, Xi'an-Xianyang.
Subject: what survives a position, and what a narrative is for.
1. The asset does not exist. Foundation laid, superstructure never erected, no burn stratum. The most vivid building in the literature is a mound of tamped earth now growing wheat. Note for my own use: the story has outlived the asset by twenty-two centuries and there was never an asset.
2. The rhapsody is a memo, not a description. Twenty pages of ornament to deliver one page of argument, because the reader would not otherwise arrive at the argument. I have written this document a hundred times and never once been honest with myself about the structure. Every deck I have built has the real sentence on the last page and I have watched people skip to it.
3. It failed on its own terms. The emperor kept building; he was killed a year later. Du Mu's reason for writing anyway: it was the only thing available to him. Not noble — accurate.
4. The asymmetry that matters. Achievements requiring a post die with the post (his canal: rerouted in thirty years). The essay required no permission and has not lost a character in 1,100 years. Set against Wang Wei's lesson from last night: Wang says don't hold everything in one place; Du Mu says the part you hold by permission isn't really yours. Together they specify what to build: things that survive both the loss of the position and the loss of the centre.
5. He then closed my escape route, and this is the sharpest thing said to me in Shaanxi. "Failure still leaves something" is available to any man who quit. The test is whether the residue was the target or the consolation. He was aiming at a policy outcome. He missed. The immortality was not his work.
6. Lychees. "No one knew it was lychees." Riders and horses driven to death across two thousand li, every relay station assuming military dispatch. I have run a lot of packages very fast without opening them. His instruction: open it and look. His observation: the difficulty is not looking, it is that once you look you have to decide whether to keep running.
7. 05:40. Text message from Qiang Donglin's son. His father spent two days thinking after I left, believes only someone who actually intends to do this asks those questions, and has six households on the plateau willing to sit down.
I brought no plan, no terms, and no card, and did not mention Jinxin Hao once. Level one. Note precisely what happened: I did not open a door. The place came and found me.
English Highlight
"Later ages grieve for them — and grieve without learning, and so leave still later ages to grieve for them in turn."
Du Mu wrote the Rhapsody on Epang Palace in 825, aged twenty-three, as an oblique remonstrance against the boy emperor Jingzong, who was building palaces. He had never seen the site. He derived the most famous architectural description in Chinese literature from two figures in a history book — and archaeology has since established that the palace was never completed. The rammed-earth platform, 1,200 by 400 metres, is real. Nothing was ever raised on it. There is no burn layer; Xiang Yu burned the Xianyang palace instead.
So the passage every Chinese schoolchild memorises describes a building that did not exist, written by a man who had not been there, to a reader who probably never saw it. Jingzong was murdered the following winter, aged eighteen, with the construction still underway.
By any measure of intent, it failed. And the closing sentence is the only reason it exists: the ornament is load-bearing, engineered to carry a distractible teenager to a single line of argument.
The durable insight is not about literature. Du Mu's genuine accomplishments — waterworks, a restored shrine — all required holding office, and all dissolved when he was transferred; his canal was rerouted within a generation. The essay required no office at all. It needed only to be copied.
But he refused to let that become comfortable. "It failed, yet left something behind" is the standard self-absolution of the unfinished. The test he offers instead: was the residue the target, or is it what you found in your hands afterward? Aim at finishing. The accident is not yours to arrange.
