English Mirror: Zilu pulled a drowning man from the water; the man thanked him with an ox, and Zilu accepted it. Confucius said: now the people of Lu will always save the drowning. — Zilu accepted, and so encouraged virtue; Zigong declined, and so put an end to good deeds.

Twenty-sixth of November, 2038, a Friday, four in the afternoon, the buying station at Aksu: the last day of the scales. The last truck from Wushi, three households, nineteen sacks; Sister Liu drew a double line under the ledger and pushed the abacus away: "This year's done." He Yuan took down the wooden sign that says "Buying", wiped it and leaned it against the storeroom wall until next September; Patigul Apa turned her little stool upside down on the sorting table and patted the dust off it. In the storeroom Luo, the station agent, sat at the long table before a green tea tin worn down to the one character for tea, full to the brim with slips: shop receipts, card torn from cigarette packets, corners of exercise books, numbers in ballpoint, the bottom ones yellow through and crumbling. Reading glasses on, he smoothed them flat one by one and read each out while Sister Liu wrote: "September 2007, re-sorting at the table, Apa and two others, two extra nights, twenty a night each: 120." "October 2011, the beam under the scale rotted: wood, nails, a carpenter: 340." "2019, taxi to take Tursun's father to the county hospital: 80." "Uncle Luo, does that count?" "It counts. He turned his ankle unloading here." Thirty-odd years of one man paying the yard's costs from his own pocket, all in one tin.

At dusk a big man carried the last six sacks off a truck, one in each hand, three trips, and stood in the doorway: "All this tin, you paid yourself?" Tall, broad, bristly-bearded, in a rough short coat with a cloth sash, a loud voice. Zhong You, styled Zilu, of Bian in Lu. "When I was young I told my teacher: my carriage, my horses, my furs, I'd share with friends, and if they wore them out I wouldn't mind. I never took that back. Your tin is not minding. But the time my teacher praised me most wasn't that. It was when I accepted an ox." He had pulled a drowning man from a river; days later the family tied an ox at his gate as thanks, and he took it. People said: so Zhong You saves men for an ox. My teacher said: from now on the people of Lu will always pull out the drowning. Because everyone knows that if you save someone and are thanked and accept, no one will say a word. And Zigong, rich, who ransomed a man of Lu stranded abroad and declined to claim the refund the state offered: everyone praised him; the teacher said he was wrong. Taking the money would not have lessened his goodness; refusing it meant no one would ransom anyone again. A poor man brings one home: if he claims, people say look at Zigong; if he doesn't, his family goes hungry. Next time he won't.

Luo: "I meant this tin to show the station these things cost money. I never meant for it to pay me back." "Then you're Zigong." Who takes your place? "Agent: the company's sending Sister Liu. The scales stay with Eli. The sorting table and the books, He Yuan." "One man's work split into three. Which of the three has your pocket? Next September the table needs re-sorting; Apa and the others work two extra nights: where does the money come from? Sister Liu claims it, the station looks back: thirty years of Luo and not one cent claimed for re-sorting. Would she dare?" Sister Liu reddened: "I wouldn't. I'd pay myself. When I couldn't afford it, we'd stop re-sorting." By ten that night the tin was empty, seven pages written, the abacus run twice: 41,630 yuan. "That much. I thought it was nothing: a few dozen here, a hundred there." "A few dozen, for thirty years." Next morning he did three things: four new lines in the station's books; he claimed the sum, and when the company said thirty-year-old slips couldn't be checked, he struck out what couldn't, and signed for the 28,400 approved: "This is my ox." And he carried the taped chair to Eli: "These two years you sat with me beside you. From now you sit with me gone. It isn't the same." — M.

Memo to file. Aksu, 26–27 November 2038. The ox.

1. The tin. A green tea tin of slips: receipts, cigarette-pack card, exercise-book corners. Re-sorting overtime 2007; a rotten scale beam 2011; a farmer's father to hospital 2019. Thirty-odd years of one man's pocket.

2. Zilu's vow. "My carriage, horses and furs I'd share with friends, and not mind if they wore them out." He never took it back. And yet his teacher praised him most for accepting an ox.

3. The ox. He pulled a drowning man out; the family tied an ox at his gate; he took it. "From now on the people of Lu will always pull out the drowning": saving, thanks, acceptance, no one says a word.

4. The refusal. Zigong ransomed a man and would not claim the state's refund. Praised by all; wrong, said the teacher: "Taking it costs his goodness nothing; refusing it means no one will ransom again." The poor man who follows can neither claim nor afford not to. Zilu accepted and encouraged virtue; Zigong declined and ended it.

5. The diagnosis. Luo meant to show the station the costs, "never meant it to pay me back." "Then you're Zigong."

6. The successor test. One man's job is now three: agent (Sister Liu), scales (Eli), sorting table and books (He Yuan). None has his pocket. Next September's re-sorting: would Sister Liu dare claim what Luo never claimed in thirty years? "I wouldn't. I'd pay myself. When I couldn't, we'd stop re-sorting." That is how a practice dies.

7. The number. All slips read, seven pages: 41,630 yuan. "I thought it was nothing: a few dozen at a time." "A few dozen, for thirty years."

8. The Wall Street version. A desk praised for years as the cheapest: its head paid the late cars, the data and the new hires' dinners himself and never expensed them. He left; next year's budget was set on the old numbers; six months later the desk broke up. The low cost had been one man's pocket. Money you can't see in the books still exists; someone paid it and you didn't know. You find out when he leaves.

9. The line. "If only a saint can afford a good deed, you can only wait for the next saint. Accepting the ox lets the next ordinary person afford it too."

10. The four lines. Into the station's books: re-sorting paid by the hour; fares and a meal for farmers who come to hear their accounts; training counted as work, not absence; small repairs paid by the station, nobody's pocket.

11. The claim. "Really claim it?" "If I don't, you'll never be able to." The company balked at thirty-year-old slips; he struck the unprovable, signed for 28,400: "This is my ox." And the taped chair to Eli: "Two years you sat with me beside you; from now, with me gone. Not the same."

12. Next. The airport, back to Chengdu. Alim's photo: from the drying-house roof, an old wooden pole forked at one end, the fork worn shiny. "My father saw it and grabbed it with his left hand and won't let go. Patigul Apa's word, the pole that sends things up: is this it? His birthday is the twentieth next month. Will you come?"

"Zilu accepted, and so encouraged virtue; Zigong declined, and so put an end to good deeds."
Two of Confucius's disciples did the same kind of good deed and got opposite verdicts. Zilu saved a drowning man and accepted an ox in thanks; Zigong ransomed a countryman abroad and refused the refund the state of Lu offered. The teacher praised the first and faulted the second: by refusing payment, Zigong had made rescue look like something only the rich could afford, and so fewer people would attempt it.
Organisations run on the same arithmetic. Many smooth-running operations are quietly subsidised by one devoted person who pays small costs from their own pocket and never claims them: overtime for a re-sort, a repair, a taxi, a training day. The books look lean and the process looks robust, but the true cost is off the ledger.
When that person leaves, successors face a choice between claiming costs their predecessor never claimed, which feels shameful, and paying themselves until they can't. Either way, the practice decays. The remedy is to put the subsidy on the books before departure, and for the founder to accept reimbursement, so that claiming becomes normal.
"If I don't claim it, you'll never be able to."
