English Mirror: The Grand Historian took Qian's hand and wept: "When I am dead you must become Grand Historian; and when you are Grand Historian, do not forget what I wished to set down." — Qian bowed his head and wept: "Your son is not clever, but I will set out in full the old records my father arranged, and dare not leave a gap." — (Sima Tan, weighing the six schools of thought, began by quoting the Great Commentary: "The world has one aim and a hundred ways of thinking; they reach the same place by different roads.") — "Events of one time in different states, years that did not line up: so I made ten tables."

Twenty-sixth of December, 2036, New Jersey. "You can reach it. I can't any more." On top of my mother's wardrobe, beside two cartons, a round blue tin of Danish butter cookies, the kind that in every house I knew held needles, thread and cards of buttons. This one I had never seen. Yellowed tape round the lid, brittle to the touch. "Your father put it up there the day before he went into hospital. Fifteen years; I never opened it."

On top, a factory badge: rusted clip, a man in his forties with his hair combed back and his mouth shut, as if the photographer had asked him to smile and he hadn't. Riverside Carton. Han Lixin. QC. Under it, a blank production record: nine printed columns, date, order number, customer, size, flute, wall, quantity, shift, inspector's signature. Beyond the ninth, in the margin, a tenth column ruled in pencil against a straightedge. At the top: WHAT FOR. Beneath it, in Chinese: why make it. Four small boxes: what goes in; where it's kept; how high it's stacked; how long. On the back of the sheet you could feel the grooves. He had gone over those four boxes so many times the pencil had pressed through the paper.

My first New Year's Eve in Chengdu, my mother on the phone: your father spent twenty-six years at that factory, and the last two he wanted to change a form. It was missing a column, and it cost them two months of wasted work a year. It recorded how much was made; nothing recorded why. He was going to change it when he was promoted. He wasn't promoted. Eight years I have added columns, in Guanzhong, at Jiayuguan, in Turpan's ledgers, and each time I thought of that call without knowing what his column looked like. Now it was in my hand.

Why the top of the wardrobe and not me? "He said: give it to him when he sets a table of his own. I asked what that meant. He said: when how many columns a table has is his to decide. Otherwise he won't understand it." And how did she know I had? "In October you phoned and said the book was printed and the last page was blank, for whoever uses the book. I thought: a book that leaves its last page for someone else to write on, that's one he decided himself." Three more things in the tin: a grey spiral notebook, an unsealed envelope, and a square of corrugated board a little bigger than a playing card, cut clean so the flutes showed. "He carried that in his shirt pocket every day. He said it was his ruler."

That night in the garage, at his workbench, under the pegboard where every tool hangs over its own drawn outline, an old man in a wide robe and a tall cap sat on the upturned paint bucket. "This is a table. One thing, one space; when a space is empty you know what's missing." Sima Tan. He had collected records for decades to write everything down from the earliest times to his own, fell ill at Luoyang, and met his son, back from a long mission south of Shu, between the Yellow River and the Luo. "Do not forget what I wished to set down." The son finished, and it was more than the father had planned: ten tables, because what different states did in the same year could not be seen side by side any other way; and after every chapter a passage in his own voice for the why the tables couldn't hold. He looked at my father's form for a long time. "Nine columns for what the order did. This one for why. He was bolder than my son." — M.

Memo to file. New Jersey, 26–27 December 2036. My father's tenth column.

1. The form. Nine printed columns, all of them about what an order is: date, number, customer, size, flute, wall, quantity, shift, sign-off. The tenth, pencilled into the margin: WHAT FOR. Contents / storage / stack height / days. Gone over until it grooved the paper.

2. The notebook, 2012–2020. One line per returned batch. "March, cold store, lettuce cartons, stacked six high, collapsed on day nine. Tested at the plant: pass." "August, sea freight, soft on arrival, dents at a touch. Pass." "November, canned goods, stacked twelve high, bottom two layers crushed. Pass." At the end of each year, one number: rework in working days. 44, 39, 41 and on to 2020; nine years, 360 days. Forty a year. Two months. When my mother said two months of wasted work a year, it was not a complaint. It was a calculation.

3. The breakdown. On the last page he sorted nine years of returns: cold store and damp, 161; stacked too high or too long, 87; sea freight, 42; actually made badly, 22. Of 312 returned batches, 290 had passed every test in the plant's lab. Ninety-three per cent of what came back was within spec.

4. The letter, March 2019, never sent. To the plant manager. "We test boxes in the lab at 73 degrees Fahrenheit and 50 per cent humidity. That is the standard. Cold stores are at 35 degrees and 90 per cent. Damp takes half the strength; long stacking takes more. Nine columns on the production sheet and not one says where the box is going." Proposal: one column, four boxes, one question when the order is taken, one minute. Last line: "We measure the box. What the customer wants is for the thing inside to arrive still good." Signed: Han Lixin, QC, 24th year. A yellow sticky note in pencil, in Chinese: hand in after the promotion.

5. His ruler. A square of C-flute board he kept in his shirt pocket every day. I have spent four years making sample bags that must live beside the goods. He carried his against his chest.

6. The precedent. A court historian spends decades gathering records, falls ill before he can write, and on his deathbed tells his son not to forget what he meant to set down. The son promises to leave no gap. What the son finished was more than the father's plan: ten tables to line up what different states did in the same year, and after every chapter a passage in his own voice, "the Grand Historian says", for the why that a table cannot hold.

7. What he said. "He did hand it in. He told your mother three or four times; he wrote it in that notebook for nine years. He said it to people who couldn't change the form, in a notebook he never handed up." Why wait until I set a table of my own? "Then, you couldn't have read it. He knew." And, of a box factory and a raisin business: the world has one aim and a hundred ways of thinking; one wants the thing in the box to arrive still good, the other wants the thing in the bag to reach the mouth still good. The line I wrote down five times: not forgetting doesn't mean remembering what he did. It means going on with the question he didn't finish asking.

8. The last page. 27 December, on the blank last page of my copy of the Essentials, a table of four columns: who eats it; where it's kept; how long; what it's for. In June the batches the receiver marked down were the ones the eaters liked best; Hu measured what was in the bag, and the eater wanted it still good when it reached the mouth. Same thing as the last line of the 2019 letter. At the foot of the page: this column is the one Han Lixin wanted to add. My mother, at the stove: "If he saw it he wouldn't say anything. He'd take a pencil and go over it once more."

9. Next. 11 p.m., Shao Min from Shanghai: a supplier in Fresno, three generations of Thompson Seedless. The grandmother, ninety-one, asked whether the Essentials come in English. "Then ask him to translate one." The first page of that book says the drawings were all made in drying houses, and anywhere else you should look at your own ground first. Fresno has no drying houses.

"Not forgetting doesn't mean remembering what he did. It means going on with the question he didn't finish asking."
Sima Tan was court historian of the Han. He spent his working life gathering documents, local records and the recollections of old men, intending to write a history from the earliest times to his own. He fell ill before he could write it, and on his deathbed took his son's hand and told him not to forget what he had meant to set down. The son, Sima Qian, completed the Records of the Grand Historian, one of the founding works of Chinese historical writing.
It was not quite the book the father had planned. The son added ten chronological tables, which set side by side what different states were doing in the same year, and closed each chapter with a short passage of his own judgment. The tables held the what; the commentary held the why.
Industrial forms have the same division. A production record captures what was made: size, quantity, shift, sign-off. What it rarely captures is what the product is for: what it will carry, where it will sit, for how long, under what load. A product can pass every test in the plant and fail in use, because it was tested against a standard rather than against a purpose. Quality engineers call the missing idea fitness for purpose.
In both cases what is handed down is not the document. It is the unanswered question.
We measure the box. What the customer wants is for the thing inside to arrive still good.
