English Mirror: The plough and the hoe are the work of the ancient sages; from the time people first ate grain until today, the people have depended on them. — I was out in the fields, and one day I called a ploughman over, and counted off its parts with him; it was as if I had climbed into the court of the Farmer-God and received the method of sowing. — (His short treatise describes the plough of the lower Yangtze in eleven parts — share, mouldboard, sole, share-clamp, beam-block, stanchion, beam, handle, depth-regulator, pin, swivel — recording for each its length and breadth and what it is for.) — (Later generations rebuilt the plough from what he recorded, and it matched the old.)

Eighth of October, 2036, ten in the morning, Chengdu. The same printer at the end of an old street in the north of the city — the second edition printed here in 2033, the third in 2034. Mr Zhong, fifties, stouter, a patch of white in his hair, rising from behind a stack of paper: "Boss Ma, why is this edition so thin?" The proof on his bench: a plain cream cover, one line — The Two Ends: Methods, fourth edition. Sixty-four pages; the third had a hundred and twelve. "Last time thirty-one entries, sixteen hearsay, two colours. This time not one entry about goods?" — "None. The goods are in each family's own books. This one holds only methods." He read the first page aloud: the drawings in this book were all made in drying houses in Turpan, Kuqa and at the Changs'; anywhere else, look at your ground first, then at the drawings. "First time I've seen a book whose first page tells you not to trust it too quickly."

Fourteen methods: how to make a ruler; halve, seal, open once a year; cut the line the moment the thing goes on, and if late, say how late; pinch blind; how to separate neighbouring grades; pinch bags one and five before grading; ask not whether but when last; if no year, between which two events; write the event, not the date; every note states which layer it governs; seal on the same day, delegate if absent, note the day and hour; string two ledgers together on one physical thing; ask about night work at night; teach by stages, each with a written picture of readiness. Under each, a small line naming whose method it is — Chang Yushan and Lu Xiao; Barat; Aynur; Chen and Gu (Old Sun taught him); Eli, Aksu, nineteen. Fourteen methods, forty-one names. Not one word his.

Lu Guimeng came at noon, when Zhong had gone to eat and only the machines and the smell of paper were left: thin, fifty or so, coarse cloth, sleeves rolled, forearms burnt dark; in his hands a palm-sized wooden model of a plough — curved beam, raised handle, a small iron share at the front. He set it beside the proof and read a while: "This book of yours is a plough."

He turned the model so the beam pointed at me. I lived in a small place in the south, Puli, and farmed a few fields myself, with a plough every day. For years I didn't know how it was made. One day I called a ploughman over in the field and asked him to tell me each part — what the iron at the front is called, the wood at the back, how long this, how wide that, why this shape. He named one, I counted one. Eleven. Share, mouldboard, sole, share-clamp, beam-block, stanchion, beam, handle, depth-regulator, pin, swivel. I went home and wrote the eleven, each with its size and its use. Can you make a plough? He laughed. "No. I can count." And, and I picked up the pen: those who can make don't write; those who write can't make; what the writer can do is count what the maker does, one by one.

I thought of Aksu in September: you keep accounts; you don't reckon. I can't pinch, hang, grade, or find the sweating bunch on the night mats. For eight years I've done what he did that day in the field: call over the one who can, ask him to say it part by part, and count. And: at the head of my piece I wrote, "one day I called a ploughman over and counted its parts." I put the ploughman first. I don't know his name; I didn't ask. That is what I owe most in that piece. He found the line night sweat, dry or not before dawn: Aynur, Turpan. "You asked. Forty-one names, one by one." Five times into the book: a plough is passed down because someone counted it clearly; the counter is passed down because he wrote the name of the one who counted it for him. And: more than a thousand years later people rebuilt the plough from my eleven parts, and it matched. They had never seen the ploughman or me. They saw the eleven. — M.

Memo to file. Chengdu and Kuqa, 8–20 October 2036. The fourth edition. Fourteen methods, forty-one names, none mine.

1. The book. The Two Ends: Methods, fourth edition, 64 pages (third edition: 112). No goods, no entries — methods only. Page one: scope — drawn in drying houses in Turpan, Kuqa and at the Changs'; elsewhere, look at your ground first. Each method credited to its originator; forty-one names. Last page blank, headed: this page belongs to whoever uses this book; write here the methods that grow on your ground, and whose they are.

1a. How it was made. Four months, June to September, one method a night, each read back by phone to the person it came from. The drawings are not mine — I can't draw: the ruler by Alim, the box's six layers by Erkin, the batch bag in the middle tray by Lu Xiao — each credited in its corner. The credit lines were negotiated: Barat wanted his name in both scripts; Gu insisted on Old Sun taught him ("leave it out and it's mine, and it isn't"); Chang: "Write my name, not whose father I am"; Aynur asked that her mother be included — her mother taught her. Fidelity: the ploughman's scribe considered improving two parts and didn't — change it and it's my plough, not the Jiangdong plough. I considered trimming Barat's three cues to two and merging Eli's stages three and four; I changed nothing. Written as they use them.

2. Terms. Five hundred copies, unnumbered, to anyone who asks. (Third edition: thirty, numbered, "I must know where each one is.") Byline changed from by Ma Ke to "recorded by Ma Ke." "By" says the things are mine; "recorded" says they are theirs, and I wrote them down.

3. The precedent. A ninth-century farmer-scholar who used a plough for years without knowing how it was made, called a ploughman over, counted its eleven parts with him, recorded each part's size and use, and put the ploughman at the head of his account — without a name, which he called his greatest debt. Centuries later the plough was rebuilt from his count. The maker doesn't write, the writer doesn't make; the writer's job is to count the maker's work and name him.

4. Kuqa, 10 October. Same-day sealing, as agreed. Kamil (43) chose his family's slot for the first time; Yiming sat beside him and answered nothing: "You choose; I watch." Three needle-pricks sewing the bag. "At nineteen the needle pricked me too." On the 15th, the extra small bag, sealed five days late on purpose: test of a tenth of a grade per day; open 18 Nov next year; if half a grade firmer, it's real — Yiming in blue, Eli in pencil.

5. Distribution, 15 October. Fifty-one parcels: 50 copies to Shanghai; one per name to Shanshan (5), Hami (2), Turpan (3), Kuqa (4), Aksu (3), the Changs (2). The third edition's copy one stays with me — the recorder's own mistakes, and what it looks like when others come and correct them line by line.

5a. The first parcel and the first handwritten line. The scribe's advice: "A book has no first copy, but sending has a first parcel — send it to the last person who counted for you." The Turpan parcel went first; Aynur's copy was in it. Before posting He Yuan's copy I wrote on its blank last page: He Yuan, Aksu, from September 2036, standing behind Eli. The first writing on any of the five hundred blank pages — by the recorder, naming someone with no method yet, just standing behind. Replies: Nurlan's voice note reading Barat's line in both languages ("louder," says his father); Aynur's hand pressed on her line for a long time — she can't read Chinese; Alim pointed it out; Luo, on the teaching page crediting Eli with unpacked from Luo Jianguo's eight sentences: "Written like that, it's right"; Chang: "that sentence was just something I said in Shanshan" — "what you just said is exactly what's yours"; Lu Xiao's first entry on her blank page, with Ahmet's son's Uyghur line beneath (our family does it too); Guli's copy under the glass of her shop counter, open at the night-sweat page — "a customer asked what the book was; I said, it's my mother's line." 5b. Kamil's choice. At the end he chose a middling string — "I remembered Uncle Chang's line in your book: choose the best and next year you can't reach it" — and his father nodded, the first nod of the morning. Why didn't you say anything? "If I'd spoken, it would have been my choice." Yiming's hands shook sealing the late bag; Eli held its mouth: if I don't see next 18 November, Eli opens it. Zhong, at the door: "Thirty years printing books; the first time anyone changed by to recorded." Eleven yuan a copy; not for sale.

6. Shanghai, 19 October. Own ruler, own criteria, blind, 100 bags: five-way agreement 74% (March: 38%). Gu retires next year; Little Xu is standing behind him on Eli's card, in stage two. Lu Xiao's dryer families ran four batches, four bags kept. "We plan to reprint five hundred — and keep the blank last page in every copy."

6a. What this year was. One trip fixed; every other place called me — not once to decide anything, always to watch: a young woman by a kiln for a day, an old man pinching fifty-two years for his son, a woman feeling for the sweating bunches at night, a nineteen-year-old writing a course for a twenty-two-year-old. Shanghai's five masters, from drawings, in their own place, from a wooden model: 38 in March, 74 in October — the later machine turning, adjusted by them. In the book: everywhere I went this year, I wasn't needed.

7. The ticket. 22 December, Chengdu–New York, then on to New Jersey. My mother's reply: a photograph of my room — the bed, the desk, my high-school team photo still on the wall, clean new sheets. "Your room hasn't been touched in eight years. I changed the sheets today." The calendar on that wall stopped at September 2028, the month I left. "Mum, don't change the calendar." — "I haven't. Not in eight years." How long will you stay? A month. "Good." In the book: she never said she was waiting. She changed the sheets.

"Those who can make don't write; those who write can't make; what the writer can do is count what the maker does, one by one."
In the ninth century a scholar who farmed his own fields near Suzhou wrote a short treatise on the plough used in the lower Yangtze. He explains how he came to write it: one day in the field he called a ploughman over and, with him, counted off the plough's parts. The result lists eleven components with their dimensions and functions, precise enough that modern historians have reconstructed the implement from it.
The preface admits the arrangement plainly. The farmer knew how to plough; the scholar knew how to write things down. The treatise exists because one asked and the other answered, part by part. Its one failing is also plain: the ploughman is honoured at the head of the text but not named.
Documentation of practical knowledge is usually produced this way, by someone who cannot do the work interviewing someone who can. That is not a weakness to hide. It is a division of labour, and it carries an obligation: count carefully, record each part's purpose as well as its form, and credit the person who knew. A procedure that names its sources can be checked, extended and trusted in a way that an anonymous one cannot.
The book finished in this chapter lists fourteen methods and forty-one names, none of them the compiler's own, and changes its byline from "by" to "recorded by." It also ends with a blank page for the reader's own ground.
A plough is passed down because someone counted it clearly; the counter is passed down because he wrote the name of the one who counted it for him.
