English Mirror: When the moon stands at the east or west, the water swells in the east and west; when the moon stands at the zenith or nadir, the tide lies level in south and north. As one ebbs another fills, coming and going without end — all of it tied to the moon, not tied to the sun. — It is because beneath there lies a sandbar, stretching unbroken from south to north, which obstructs the great waves; held back and let go, twisted and turned, they are driven up into the bore. — (He served as an official on the coast, watched the tides morning and evening for ten years, and wrote his treatise on the tides with charts; he also made a lotus clepsydra to fix the hours, which came into wide use.)

Fourteenth of October, 2035, ten in the morning, Kuqa, Yiming's house. The little room on the east side of the yard: three rows of wooden shelves against the walls, a small cloth bag in each slot, one a year, each tied with a slip giving the year. The earliest, 1984; the latest, last year. Fifty-one slots. Nine are empty. In each empty slot, instead of a bag, a folded paper with one character: empty. Some of the nine papers so yellow they crack. On the opposite wall, the nine years, written large in ink made from pot-soot, one to a line; the top ones faded and traced over, the new ink and the old a different shade. Yiming under the wall, seventy, more bent than last year, leaning on a jujube-wood stick; his son beside him to translate. "I wrote the first eight years on this wall twenty-three years ago; the last was added later. I didn't know what for. Only that if I left them empty without the years, later no one would know which years were empty."
Two envelopes from my bag: Chang. Luo. Both sealed. I had asked each separately, in the same words, nothing else: which years in your life do you remember as bad years? No mention of Yiming, of nine years, of why. Chang took two days; Changbin photographed a sheet his father dictated. Luo took a week, then said "my memory doesn't count, I'll go through the ledgers" — twenty-odd years of station books, tonnage and average grade year by year — and mailed his sheet himself. I had promised myself I would open them only under that wall.
Yan Su came before I tore them open. Older than Yiming, seventies; a wide robe with a white rim at the hem — salt from dried seawater. A long chart rolled tight under one arm; on the other palm a small bronze lotus with a slender wooden float in its heart. From the doorway, looking at the nine years: nine. You want to know what they follow.
He sat on a stool by the shelves. Yiming couldn't see him — only me standing towards an empty stool — and didn't ask; he leaned on the wall and waited. Yan: I was an official on the coast. Everyone there knows the tide comes twice a day. Why, there were many stories — the sea breathing in and out; the sun. I didn't know who was right. So I went every morning and every evening. To see what? When it came, when it went, which rock it rose to. And the moon that day — quarter or full, where in the sky. Ten years. Ten? One year shows you nothing; in one year everything looks right. Ten years laid side by side showed it: the tide comes a little later every day, later by just as much as the moon rises later. The big-moon days, big tides. And, and I picked up the pen: all of it tied to the moon, not to the sun.
How did you know it wasn't something about that one place? A good question. So I didn't watch one place. I served in several places on the coast and watched at each, and asked old fishermen there to record for me. They didn't know what I was looking for; I only had them write down when the tide came. The places differed in hour and height. But the daily lateness was the same; the big days were the same. What all the places share is the moon's. And: one place was different. The mouth of the Qiantang — a tide several zhang higher than anywhere, coming in like a wall. The moon too? The tide is the moon's. The wall is not. Under the river mouth lies a sandbar, running north to south, blocking the tide; held back, bent and turned, it's driven up into that shape. The moon belongs to everyone. The sandbar belongs to the Qiantang. Five times into the book: what several places all have is the sky; what only one place has is the sand under that place.
I tore them open. Chang's, in Changbin's hand, seven years: 89 — a spring freeze; 93 — hail in June; 96 — hung just as the overcast set in; 2003 — the three rains; 08 or 09, can't remember — autumn cold early; 2010 — wind, roofs torn off; 2015 — heat, the first ten days too fierce. Luo's, small and dense, eight years, each with two figures — tonnage bought, average grade — and a line: "I wrote eight from memory first, then checked the ledgers. The 08 in my memory is 09 in the books. Corrected." Side by side on the floor under the wall; I read the nine aloud and the son translated each. 1989: Chang yes, Luo yes. 1993: yes, yes. 1996: Chang yes, Luo no. 1999: no, no. 2003: yes, yes. 2006: no, no. 2009: Chang's 08-or-09, Luo's ledger 09 — count it. 2010: yes, yes. 2017: no, no. Very quiet in the room. Both: 89, 93, 03, 09, 10 — five. One: 96. Neither: 99, 06, 17 — three. 96 circled: Turpan is nearer Kuqa than Aksu is; the overcast may have reached only this side. Counted with the sky, noted one of two; sky; seventy per cent. — M.
Memo to file. Kuqa, 14–15 October 2035. Nine empty years on a wall, checked against two independent, imperfect records. Six are weather. Three are the family's.
1. Protocol. Two informants in two other places, asked the identical question separately — which years do you remember as bad years? — with no mention of the target list. Chang (Turpan area): memory, dictated. Luo (Aksu): memory first, then corrected against twenty-odd years of station ledgers (one year shifted, 08→09). Envelopes opened only in front of the wall.
2. Results. Target years: 89, 93, 96, 99, 03, 06, 09, 10, 17. — Both informants: 89, 93, 03, 09, 10 (5). — One informant: 96 (Chang only; geographically plausible — nearer). Classed as weather at 70%. — Neither: 99, 06, 17 (3). Yiming's own account of the three: 1999, his father died that summer and nobody watched the houses for a fortnight; 2006, he and his brother divided the property and the hands were halved; 2017, his son's wedding — seven days with nobody in the houses.
3. The principle, from the precedent. Ten years of tide-watching along the coast: the tide tied to the moon wherever it was watched; the bore at one estuary the work of its own sandbar. What several places all have is the sky; what only one place has is the sand under that place.
4. Why the precise record lost to the rough ones. Last year Yiming's son made a meticulous table of the nine years with months and causes — entirely from Yiming. However accurate, it is Yiming saying it again. Chang's sheet cannot place one year to within twelve months; Luo's memory was wrong by a year until the ledger corrected it. Neither knew the target. Their agreement is evidence; the precise table's agreement with the wall is not. — A very precise record from the same source is only you saying it again. Two rough records from other sources, when they agree, count.
5. What it meant to him. He touched each year. 1989: he thought he hadn't watched the houses properly. 1993: him again. 2003: his wife had said the roof needed replacing; he didn't replace it; then came the three rains. He has believed for thirty-two years it was the roof. In ink of pot-soot, after each year, one character: sky, six times; family, three times; and beside 1996's sky a small dot — "not very sure."
5a. Mutual checking. Late that night, via his son: "Those three years are my family's. The Changs and the Luos must have years of their own too. Take my wall and check theirs." Every family's list of bad years can be checked against every other's. Each family is the others' clepsydra. Not me checking for them; them checking one another. This needs no one in the middle. And a deadline: the six years were returned to the sky by the memories of three men aged sixty-five, sixty-seven and seventy. This can only be done this year; next year perhaps; in ten years no one will be able to say those six years were weather. 5b. Dependents too. Years in the others' lists but not blank on the wall — 1985, 2001, 2012, 2015 — are years his houses held out (fresh mud on the walls in 1985; an extra layer of straw on the roof in 2015). The sandbar isn't always bad; sometimes it shields a place from the sky. But the sky is still in those bags; whoever later subtracts across the fifty-one slots must take it out first. His wife, from the doorway: the roof — she was wrong about it too; a new roof wouldn't have stopped those three rains. Their son: I've never heard her say that in my life.
6. Entered as item 21 in category 21. Who: Yiming. What: twenty-three years ago wrote nine empty years on a wall without knowing what for. For whom: himself, as it turned out, today. Benefit at the time: none. Benefit today: six years he no longer has to blame himself for.
7. Next. At the gate, 15 October: "Eighteenth of November — the third slot. Come. Bring Eli. The first two slots were two points. When the third is opened, it's three."

"What several places all have is the sky; what only one place has is the sand under that place."
An eleventh-century official posted to the coast watched the tides morning and evening for ten years and concluded, against the competing theories of his day, that the tides are governed by the moon: "tied to the moon, not tied to the sun." He also explained the famous tidal bore at the mouth of the Qiantang, the wall of water that has drawn spectators for centuries, as the product of a local sandbar across the estuary, which holds the tide back and releases it violently.
The two findings together make a complete method. One cause acts on every coast; another acts only at one estuary. You separate them by comparing records from several places. What all the places share belongs to the common cause. What only one place shows belongs to that place.
Anyone who studies a single series, a firm's results, a farm's yields, a family's bad years, faces the same question the official faced: is what I see the moon, or my own sandbar? The series cannot answer it alone, however long or precise it is.
The method has two conditions that are easy to neglect. The other records must be independent: kept by people who do not know what you are looking for, and not derived from your own account. And independence is worth more than precision. A meticulous reconstruction built from the same witness only restates him. Two rough, honest records from elsewhere, when they agree with him, actually tell you something.
A very precise record from the same source is only you saying it again. Two rough records from other sources, when they agree, count.
