*English Mirror: As a boy I studied the Nine Chapters; grown, I went through them again. Observing how the principles divide, gathering the roots of the art of calculation, in the intervals of probing the obscure I came to see its sense. — The method as handed down: nobody was willing to check it closely. Students followed the ancients and practised their errors. — The finer you cut it, the less you lose. Cut, and cut again, until it cannot be cut any further — and then it joins the circumference as one body, and nothing at all is lost. — Whenever you would sight what is extremely high, or sound what is utterly deep, and know its distance besides, you must use the method of doubled differences. — To measure height, double the gnomon; to measure depth, stack the squares; for what stands alone, sight three times; for what stands alone and must also be found sideways, sight four. — Now there is a sea island to be sighted. Set up two gnomons three zhang high, a thousand paces apart, the rear one aligned with the front. Walk back one hundred and twenty-three paces from the front gnomon, put the eye to the ground, sight the island's peak, and it meets the tip of the gnomon. Walk back one hundred and twenty-seven paces from the rear gnomon, sight again, and it meets that tip too. Ask: what is the height of the island, and how far is it from the gnomons?

Tenth of March, 2033, Turpan, ten in the morning. The same day of the year, the same hour, the same table in the same yard, the same man in the chair. Abdul Rahman is seventy-one. Thinner this year. The left hand is stronger than last year. The right still lies on his leg. Still no speech. On the table, two small bags: identical cloth, identical size, identical stitching. One taken off the doorframe of house three, where it has hung two years. One from the cupboard, sewn shut two years, never opened. No writing on either. Alim laid them out in a row without looking, and by the time he had finished he no longer knew which was which — his own idea, from the night before: if I know, it'll be on my face.
At ten past ten I squatted to eye level and said the sentence I had rewritten seven times. The shortest version survived. Uncle, are these two the same thing? — Not which is better. Not pick one. Only: are they the same. He looked at the table about ten seconds. Then the left hand went out. And he did not start from the left-hand bag. He went straight for the one on the right.
Liu Hui appeared at the gate. Forties, very thin, an ordinary robe gone dark with age. Two short bamboo rods of equal length, and a coil of cord. He did not come in. He stood in the gateway looking at the two bags, and said: he took the right-hand one first.
The pinching was slow. Right-hand bag, four of them. Down. Left-hand bag, two. Down. Then he drew the right-hand bag toward himself — that one only. Alim, quietly: he's chosen. I said I hadn't asked him to choose. He chose anyway. I opened the one he had drawn over. The stitching at the mouth was the one Alim and I sewed together last March. It was the cupboard half. The one that has never been in the wind.
Three layers, and the third took a while. One: he can tell them apart. Two years, and the doorframe half has lost about sixteen per cent. Seventy-one, left hand, and he separated them at a touch. Two: he did not answer my question. I asked are they the same. He answered this one. Three: what he pulled over is the backup, and by last year's own rule the backup is never the working copy. So I looked up and said he had pulled the wrong one. And Liu Hui said: how do you know he was pulling for "which one to use"?
He came into the yard then and set the two rods by the table. Let me give you a problem. And: there is an island out at sea. You are on the shore and you cannot get across. Ask: how high is the island? — You can't measure it if you can't get there. Correct. He stood the two rods up. Set up two gnomons of equal height, one behind the other, a set distance apart. And: walk back from the front one until your eye is at the ground and the island's peak just touches the tip. Write down how many paces. And: walk back from the rear one and write down a second number. And, and I picked up the pen: subtract the two, and the height of the island comes out.
I said he had never once been to the island. No. Everything you measured was on the shore. The height of the rods and the number of paces. And: all of it under my own feet. And: I gave the method a name. Doubled differences. Doubled is the two sightings. The difference is the number you get by subtracting them. And, six times into the book: what matters is not those two numbers. What matters is the difference between them.
So I put the bags back and said: the figure I have been trying to get is how hard should next year's string be, and he cannot produce it — last year he drew a circle. That is the island. You cannot get across. Then what are my two gnomons? He pointed at the table. These two bags. One has been in the wind two years. One was sewn shut and has not changed. He just now told them apart — and telling them apart is itself a number. And: the number says: sixteen per cent over two years, and he can still tell. And, five times into the book: you cannot ask him how long the ruler inside him is. And: you can ask him whether he can tell two things apart. And: one successful discrimination is one gnomon.
Last, the circle. I did another thing once. Measuring a circle. And: a circle cannot be measured — a straight rule will not lie along a curved edge. So? I draw a hexagon inside it. A hexagon is straight; it can be measured. It comes out smaller than the circle. Then I cut the six into twelve. Then twenty-four. I cut it to a hundred and ninety-two sides. Do you reach the circle? No. Flatly. Never. And, six times into the book: the finer you cut it, the less you lose. And: you never arrive — but how much you are short by, that I can calculate. And: being able to calculate the shortfall and being able to arrive are two different things. And: the first one is enough. — M.
Memo to file. Turpan, 10–12 March 2033. The blank box now has a boundary.
1. The test, and Alim's improvement on it. Two halves of the same 2031 string — one aged two years on the doorframe, one sewn shut — presented identical and unlabelled. Alim shuffled them without looking so that he himself did not know which was which: if I know, it'll be on my face. I had not thought of that and it is the difference between a test and a performance.
2. Result. He pinched four from one, two from the other, and drew one toward himself. It was the cupboard half. Seventy-one years old, one working hand, and he separated a sixteen per cent difference at a touch.
3. My error, caught by Liu Hui in one sentence. I read the pull as this is the one to use — and by our own rule the backup is never the working copy, so I concluded he had got it wrong. How do you know he was pulling for "which one to use"? I don't. I asked whether they were the same and he answered with an action, and I assigned that action a meaning it may not have.
4. The method, and it reframes two years of failed questioning. You cannot reach the island; you measure two things on your own shore and subtract. What matters is not the two numbers but their difference. Applied: I cannot ask him how hard next year's string should be — that is the island. I can ask him whether he can tell two things apart, which is a question his hand can still answer. Each successful discrimination is one gnomon.
5. What went into the blank box, 11 March — not a figure, a bound. — He discriminates a 16% difference (two years' drying). — Last autumn he failed to discriminate the two strings from Chang's (≈5% apart). — Therefore his resolution lies between 5% and 16%. In the book: this is not the answer that box wanted. It is a boundary for that box. And: a blank with a boundary and a blank without one are not the same thing. The precedent for accepting this: you never reach the circle, but how much you are short by can be calculated — and being able to calculate the shortfall is not the same as arriving, and the first one is enough.
6. The two halves have been re-assigned, posted beside the cupboard card. — Doorframe half: working. It drifts along with the goods. — Cupboard half: opened once a year, solely to measure how far the doorframe half has drifted. — Neither half is the standard. The standard is the difference between them.
7. Alim's reading, which I cannot confirm and will not file as fact. He thought all night and produced two possibilities for why his father pulled that bag: he thinks it's better, or he recognized it as 2031's. Because: the cupboard half has not changed. It is still exactly as it was the year he had his stroke. The doorframe half is not. And: what he pinched was something from the last year he could still work. Filed in the looking at each other column, not in any column with numbers in it.
8. And what happened on the 12th, which is the only part of this trip I did not plan. I told him one of those bags was sealed the year he closed the houses himself, that it was the one he pulled, that I don't know whether he recognized it, and that we will not touch it — opened once a year, weighed, sewn straight back, every year he is here. He raised the left hand. He did not reach for the pen. He touched the back of my hand, once, and put it down. Alim, afterwards: he used to do that to buyers. Price agreed, money not yet handed over — he'd touch the back of your hand. It meant the thing was settled. And: he hasn't done it since the stroke.
9. The line I wrote leaving. I came on this trip to measure him. When I had finished, he touched the back of my hand — the person being measured turned round and settled something with me. And: the two bags differ by sixteen per cent. The other difference is: last year he drew a circle, this year he touched my hand.

"The finer you cut it, the less you lose. Cut, and cut again, until it cannot be cut any further — and then it joins the circumference as one body, and nothing at all is lost."
The sentence is famous as an early statement of a limit, and the practical half of it is easy to skip. A straight rule cannot be laid along a curved edge, so the circle is, strictly, unmeasurable with the instruments available. What he does instead is inscribe a hexagon — six straight sides, all measurable — and then bisect: twelve, twenty-four, forty-eight, ninety-six, one hundred and ninety-two.
The polygon never becomes the circle. Asked directly, he says so flatly: you never arrive.
What he has instead is the shortfall, and the shortfall is calculable. Being able to compute how far short you are is not the same as arriving, and for working purposes the first is enough. Which is a different intellectual posture from either claiming the answer or abandoning the question.
The same author's other book solves a problem with the same shape and a more physical setting. There is an island offshore, and its height is wanted, and nobody can get to it. Every quantity he uses is on the beach: two poles of known height, a known distance apart, and the number of paces walked backward until the peak grazes each tip.
Whenever you would sight what is extremely high, or sound what is utterly deep, and know its distance besides, you must use the method of doubled differences.
Two sightings, and then a subtraction — and the thing that carries the information is not either measurement but the gap between them. Neither number alone says anything about the island. Their difference says everything.
There is also a remark in his preface about why the work was necessary at all, and it is less gracious than the rest:
"The method as handed down: nobody was willing to check it closely. Students followed the ancients and practised their errors."
