English Mirror: From my twentieth year I liked to hear the speech of distant places; from the day I first took office I gave my attention to geography, examining and comparing, for close on thirty years. — Whenever I met an envoy from the outer regions, or one of an envoy's attendants, I would sit down with him unhurriedly and question him about the mountains and rivers and the customs of his country … and even where it was the coarse talk of the lanes and the markets, I would hear him out to the end. — Then I had craftsmen draw the Map of China and the Foreign Lands*, thirty feet across and thirty-three feet down, at one inch to the hundred li. — Distinguishing the capped from those who fold their robes to the left; fixing the high mountains and the great rivers; drawing the four extremities together onto a fine silk, and laying out the hundred commanderies in colour. — The ancient commanderies and kingdoms are lettered in black, the present prefectures and districts in vermilion: old and new in different inks, so that it is easy to hold and to study. — The universe is wide, yet unrolled it does not fill a courtyard; wherever boat and cart can go, it is all there in front of the eye.

Sixteenth of October, evening, laying out the second edition. The first was ten copies in 2031, two hundred and eighty yuan, unlaminated, wide margins — and one of those ten was used in Korla to press a man down two mao. Fifty copies this time, and the problem is the arrangement. Three kinds of material. Luo's twelve clauses: thirty years of standing, not one of them ever measured. My own two hundred-odd from four years: mostly heard, nineteen with two independent sources. And the handful of figures that only exist since this year — the temperature gap, the weight loss, the grams. Three attempts. By subject: Luo's look at the two ends ends up next to this year's four per cent, and a reader cannot tell which sentence came from thirty years of standing and which came off a scale. By reliability: all twelve of Luo's clauses end up at the back, and I could not look at it. By deletion: take out everything new — and then it is the first edition again.

Luo, by telephone on the seventeenth, two months out of hospital and stronger than in August, did not answer the question I asked. He asked one back: why do they have to be on the same page at all? Because they are about the same thing. They're about the same thing and they came from different places. And: my twelve came out of standing there and watching for thirty years. Whether they're right, I don't know. And: your four per cent this year was weighed. That one's dead — anybody who weighs it gets the same number. And, written down the same day: put those two on one page and mine will borrow the shine. And: once a thing has borrowed the shine, the people who come after will take it as settled.

Jia Dan came on the eighteenth. Sixty-odd, in purple court robes he did not seem to notice, sleeves pushed back a little, ink on them and a trace of red — vermilion. He carried a great roll of silk, with some difficulty, and put it on the floor after first checking whether the floor was clean.Your room is too small. This won't open.

He unrolled one corner, about three feet square: mountains, rivers, walled towns, very small lettering. After a while I saw it. The characters are in two colours, black and red, side by side, and in places overlapping. What do the colours mean? The black is ancient. The red is present. He put a finger on one spot, a black name with a red name beside it. This place was called this under the Han. It is called this now. And: it is the same piece of ground.

Why not just write the present names? Because what is written in the books is the old ones. People read the old books and travel the present roads, and where a book says a place is does not line up with today's road. And: draw only the present and the reader cannot use it. Draw only the ancient and the traveller cannot use it. I suggested converting: state clearly that this ancient name equals such-and-such a present county. He looked at me. A thing that has been converted has only one thing left in it: that I converted it. And, and I picked up the pen: if I convert one of them wrongly, nobody after me can see where I went wrong. And: with both colours there, if I have it wrong he can see it for himself.

I said two colours printed together look a mess. They do. And: my map is thirty feet across and thirty-three down, and it is packed with both sets. And: the mess cannot be got rid of. And: there really are two sets of names in the world. The map is confusing because the ground is. And, six times into the book: tidy it up and you have made a decision on the reader's behalf.

Then his thirty years, and the part I had not known. How many of those places have you been to?Not many. I was in Chang'an most of the time. Then how? I asked. Every envoy from the outer regions, sat down with unhurriedly, questioned about mountains, rivers, customs. And not only the envoys. Who else? The people who came with them. The drivers, the grooms, the cooks. And why: an envoy speaks his country's official language. And: a driver talks about the road — which stretch you can't get a cart over, which stretch has water, which stretch you can't cross in summer. And, five times into the book: even where it was the coarse talk of the lanes, I would hear him out to the end. — M.

Memo to file. 16 October – 12 November 2032. Two inks, and the count that came out of them.

1. The layout problem, and why all three of my attempts were wrong. Sorting by subject makes a thirty-year observation and a weighing indistinguishable. Sorting by reliability buries the twelve clauses at the back. Deleting the new material reproduces the first edition. Luo named the actual hazard and it is not about ordering: put them on one page and mine will borrow the shine — and once a thing has borrowed the shine, whoever comes after will take it as settled.

2. The solution, and it is not a compromise between the three. Two colours on the same page, neither one covering the other. Black: came from a person. Red: measured. Red requires three attributes printed beside it — who measured, when, and how. No attributes, no red. The argument against converting the old into the new: a converted record contains only one thing, which is that I converted it — and a bad conversion is invisible to everyone downstream. Keep both, and my error is checkable by a stranger.

3. The count, and I have been staring at it. Forty-seven entries. Forty-four black. Three red. — House three runs 0.8–1.3 °C cooler than one and two. (Marco, Aug 2031, 1,176 daily readings.) — House two lost 1.8 taels over eleven days. (Alim, 2031, daily weighing.) — A doorframe reference loses ≈4% of its weight in six months. (Alim, Sept 2032, paired halves.) Four years. Three measurements. The other forty-four came from four old men, not one of whom has ever used a scale.

4. And Luo's correction to the front matter, which I printed verbatim. He approved of his twelve being black — not one of them was ever measured — and then: black is not inferior to red. You know that; the reader won't. He'll see red and think it's true, and see black and think it's hearsay. Page one now reads: the three red entries were chosen out of the forty-four black ones to be measured. Without those forty-four, there would be no way to know which three to measure.

5. The finding from Kucha on 12 November, and it undoes something I have believed all year. Ali asked Imin which of the fifty-one cells he was most confident in. Not one of them. Because: for each cell he has that year and that one occasion only. And: if two people kept the same year separately, that would be confidence. And then: he thought of this forty years ago. And: he said it to my grandfather — he wanted my grandfather to keep one too, so the two households would hold the same year. And: my grandfather said yes. The five-household exchange I designed in 2032 was proposed in Kucha around 1992 by a man who cannot read. He never got it working, for the reason that defeats everyone: it needs two households and he only had one.*

6. And the last exchange, 12 November. Imin is 67 and still keeping; this year's cell is already filled. And Ali, 15: I want to keep alongside him. The two of us will hold the same year separately. And: you don't have to arrange this — the two families can do it ourselves. In the book, the shortest line of the year: he said I don't have to arrange it.

"The ancient commanderies and kingdoms are lettered in black, the present prefectures and districts in vermilion: old and new in different inks, so that it is easy to hold and to study."
The map was thirty feet across, at an inch to the hundred li, and its designer had been at the problem for close on thirty years. The two-ink decision is the part still worth stealing.
He had a genuine conflict. The received literature used one set of place names; the roads people actually travelled used another. A map with only the present names is unusable by anybody reading an old text. A map with only the ancient names is unusable by anybody with a cart.
The obvious fix is conversion — state that the ancient name equals the present county and be done with it — and he refused it, for a reason that has nothing to do with reverence for the past. A converted entry carries no evidence of its own conversion. If he matched one of them wrongly, no later reader would have any way of seeing where the error entered. With both sets on the sheet, his identifications are visible as identifications, and a stranger can disagree with them.
He also declined to make it neat, and said why. There really were two sets of names. The map is congested because the territory was.
Tidy it up and you have made a decision on the reader's behalf.
There is a second thing in his account, easily missed, about where the information came from. He had been almost nowhere. He sat in the capital and questioned every envoy who came through — and, crucially, not only the envoys, but the men who arrived with them: the drivers, the grooms, the cooks.
An envoy describes his country in his country's official register. A driver describes the road: which stretch a cart cannot manage, where there is water, what is impassable in summer.
Even where it was the coarse talk of the lanes, I would hear him out to the end.
