*English Mirror: The body wants to be worked, only never to exhaustion. Move it, and the grain-energy is digested, the blood and the vessels run through, and illness cannot arise — it is like the pivot of a door, which does not rot. — Therefore the adepts of old practised the drawing-out exercises: the bear's neck and the owl's backward look, pulling the waist and the trunk, moving every joint, in the search for a slow old age. — I have a method called the play of the five creatures: first the tiger, second the deer, third the bear, fourth the ape, fifth the bird. It drives out illness, and it is good for the legs and feet, and it serves as drawing-out. — When the body is not easy, get up and do one creature's play; sweat comes pleasantly, and then you powder yourself, and the body is light and you want to eat. — His student practised it, and at over ninety his eyes and ears were sharp and his teeth were sound and whole. — When he was near death he brought out a scroll and offered it to the prison officer, saying: this can keep people alive. The officer, in fear of the law, would not take it. He did not press him, and asked for fire, and burned it.

Third of June. A parcel from Aksu. Sender: Luo Jianguo. Four years, and I have never seen his given name — he has been Uncle Luo and the buying agent. It was on the waybill. Small, light. Inside the outer wrapper, a package of kraft paper, three layers, tied with hemp cord in a knot that does not slip. Nothing written on it. I know what it is. I have seen the notebook three times in four years, and every time he took it out himself, turned to one page, pointed, and put it away. Twelve clauses in his own hand. The twelfth is in smaller writing and paler ink than the eleven above it: there is no thirteenth clause in this trade. On the thirty-first of December the thirteenth arrived, and it was a question: at what age should a man in this trade hand over the little he has? With, underneath, in small characters: I can't answer this one either. I did not open it.

I rang that evening. It took a long time to answer and the voice was wrong — thick. I got the parcel. I haven't opened it.Why not?I wanted to ask you something first. Has something happened to you? A pause. They found something last month. Not serious, the doctor says it isn't serious. But it needs an operation. The eleventh of July. And then: open it. I sleep easier with it at your place.

Hua Tuo came on the fourth. Fifties; thin without being frail; a short coarse jacket with the sleeves rolled to the elbow, and forearms with the muscle a man gets from working with his hands for a lifetime. He was carrying nothing, and I have kept noticing that — every other one of them came holding something. A book, counting rods, a map, apricot stones, a wooden gear. This one came empty-handed. He looked at the parcel and said: tied tight.

He told the story himself; I did not ask. When I was near death I had a scroll too. In prison. The man who kept the gaol — I've forgotten his surname. I held it out to him and said: this can keep people alive. Did he take it? No. He didn't dare. And: I was a condemned man. If he took something of mine he could not have explained himself. So what did you do? I did not press him. And: I asked for a brazier.

I asked why not press him — one more sentence and he might have taken it. And then what happens to him? I had no answer. He had a family. A gaoler, accepting a thing from a condemned man. And: how many people that scroll could have kept alive, I do not know. And, and I picked up the pen: what I do know is how much that one man would have had to carry. And: what the receiver has to carry is the thing the writer can never work out.

So the scroll is gone. Gone. Doesn't that grieve you? He thought about it: it does. I watched it burn. And then: but my life was not that scroll. He had two students. What I taught the first one was not on paper. Where was it? On him.The play of the five creatures: tiger, deer, bear, ape, bird. Is it a fighting form? It's movements. When the body isn't easy, get up and do one creature. Sweat comes, you powder yourself, the body is light and you want to eat. That's all it is. And the reason: the body wants to be worked, only never to exhaustion — move and the grain-energy is digested and the vessels run through — like the pivot of a door, which does not rot because it turns every day. And: he did it all his life. Past ninety, ears sharp, eyes sharp, and not one tooth gone. And, six times into the book: the scroll burned. The five creatures did not burn — because it was not on paper. It was in a man who did it every day.

So I pushed the parcel towards myself and told him: sixty-two, an operation in July, and he has posted me his notebook. Do you mean to keep it? I don't know. Keeping it looks like saying he's finished. Not keeping it means if something happens the notebook is gone. Both of those are questions about paper. And: think about the student. When I taught him I did not hand him a book. I made him do it. And, five times into the book: a book is for the people who aren't there. And: the ones who are there — you make them do it. At the door, turning: your sixty-two-year-old is still there. — M.

Memo to file. Chengdu, 3–11 June 2032. The parcel, and what I decided not to do with it.

1. Facts. Luo Jianguo, 62. Operation 11 July; he says the doctors say it is not serious. He has posted me the only handwritten original of the twelve clauses, three layers of kraft paper, sealed. He asked me to keep it. I opened it, read one page, and wrapped it again.

2. The question I had been treating as philosophical turns out to have a date on it. Since 31 December I have been carrying his thirteenth question — at what age should a man hand over the little he has — as an interesting problem. A parcel arrived, and it is not a problem, it is a man arranging his affairs before an operation.

3. The precedent, and the part of it I had never thought about. The scroll offered to the gaoler and refused — I had always read that as cowardice or as bad luck. It was neither. The man had a family, and taking a condemned man's possessions was a risk he had no way to explain. What the receiver has to carry is the thing the writer can never work out. I have spent three years asking old men to hand things over and never once costed what receiving would cost the person receiving.*

4. And the fact that reframes the whole thing. The scroll burned. The five-creature exercises did not — because they were never written down for transmission. They were in a student who performed them daily for seventy years and was reported sharp-eyed and sound-toothed past ninety. A manual can be refused, lost, or burned in an afternoon. A practice can only be lost by nobody doing it.

5. What I proposed, 5 June, and why he rejected it. My plan: take the notebook to Kucha in August and read it aloud to Ali (15) and Alim (20), clause by clause, then bring it back to him. He said: don't read it. And: reading is no use. And: those twelve clauses came out of thirty years of standing in purchasing stations. You read it out and they'll remember the words and not remember the standing.

6. His counter-proposal, and it is better than mine. Wait for me. Operation 11 July; the doctor says if recovery goes well I can travel by the end of August. Go at the end of August. I objected that by late August the goods are all down off the racks. I know. I'm not coming to look at goods. And, written down the same day: I'm coming to stand there.

7. So the August trip changes shape. Not a reading, not a handover of paper. Three days of a sixty-two-year-old standing in a purchasing yard with a fifteen-year-old and a twenty-year-old standing beside him. My instruction to Alim: he grabs a handful, you grab a handful. If he doesn't speak, don't ask. If he speaks, write it down. Alim asked just standing? Yes. Just standing.

8. Contingent, and I am stating it plainly rather than pretending otherwise. If the operation goes badly, the notebook in my cupboard is all that survives, and per §5 that is the part that transmits worst. I am accepting that risk because he asked me to and because he is right about what reading aloud would produce. The paper is the fallback, not the plan.

9. And the thing from Turpan on the 11th, which I did not expect and cannot read. Alim took a photocopy of the 10 March sheet to his father's bedside and asked whether he would come to Kucha at the end of August. He drew a short vertical stroke, crooked, just to the right of the circle. In March a horizontal stroke across line three meant yes. A vertical is not a horizontal, and we never agreed on one. Alim: we never arranged what a vertical means. He answered with a mark we did not teach him. He made one up. In the book: a man who invents a sign is a man who intends to say a great many more things. And the only way to ask: have him do it again, and watch where he puts it.

"He did not press him, and asked for fire, and burned it."
The scene is set down in a few characters and it is usually read for its pathos: a physician at the end of his life, holding out everything he knows, and a functionary too frightened to take it. What gets lost in that reading is that the functionary was not being unreasonable.
The man offering the scroll was under sentence. The man being offered it kept the gaol, had a household to answer for, and no way to explain afterwards how a condemned prisoner's writings had come into his possession. He was being asked to accept a gift whose entire cost fell on him.
And the physician, who could have argued, did not. Four characters carry it: he did not press him. Then he asked for a brazier.
There is a general principle underneath, and it applies wherever anyone tries to hand on something they have spent a life accumulating. The person doing the handing over has been thinking for years about how valuable the thing is. The person receiving it is calculating something completely different — what it will cost them to be the one holding it. Those two calculations are rarely done in the same room, and almost never in the same units.
But the account does not end with the burning, and the second half is the part worth carrying.
The same man taught a student a set of movements — tiger, deer, bear, ape, bird — with a plain rationale attached: the body wants to be worked, only never to exhaustion, and a joint that moves daily is like the pivot of a door, which does not rot.
That was never committed to a scroll for safekeeping. It was performed, every day, for something like seventy years, by a man reported at over ninety to have sharp eyes and ears and every tooth still sound.
The scroll was destroyed in an afternoon by one frightened man. The exercises could not be destroyed that way, because they were not in a place where a fire would reach them.
A manual can be refused. A practice has to be done — and that is both the reason it is harder to pass on and the reason it survives.
