*English Mirror: He lived in the hills and planted no fields. Day after day he treated the sick, and took no money for it. Those cured of a serious illness he asked to plant five apricot trees; those of a light one, a single tree. — After some years this came to more than a hundred thousand trees, standing thick as a forest, and the birds and beasts of the mountain came and played beneath them. — When the fruit was ripe he built a thatched granary in the wood and told the people of the time: whoever wants apricots need not report to me — set down one measure of grain in the granary, and go and take one measure of apricots for yourself. — Each year he traded the apricots for grain, and used it at once to relieve the poor and to supply travellers who had run short — better than twenty thousand bushels a year.

Sixth of May, evening. A voice note from Alim, two minutes and change. I played it three times. The arithmetic is real. House three needs fifteen days. One needs ten, two needs eleven. Those extra four or five days are money — the house tied up, a man watching it, the risk carried — and four or five days times thirty years is a figure you can compute. His brother raised it on this visit. Cut the elm on the west side and house three becomes house one. Plus four thousand for the timber. Then a long pause in the recording, and: I don't want to cut it. And: but I can't say why I don't want to. And: if I say it's because my grandfather planted it, my brother will say then you'll be short that money your whole life. And, very quietly, at the end: and he'd be right.

So I did the sum myself. Four or five extra days on one of three houses; house three yields four hundred-odd catties. Twelve to fifteen hundred a year. Plus four thousand once. Around forty thousand over thirty years — not a small figure in that family. And then I wrote the other line underneath: house three's string. Those six characters last July were about it. The horizontal stroke in March was about it. Why is house three hard? Because it is slow. Why is it slow? Because after twenty to four the tree covers it.

Dong Feng came on the eighth. No age you could name — fifty would do, seventy would do. Very old hemp, washed pale but clean; straw sandals; earth on his hands and black under the nails. He carried a cloth bag, set it on the table, and a few stones rolled out of the loose mouth. Apricot stones. He looked at my two figures and said: forty thousand. That's a good calculation.

His own arrangement first. I lived in the hills and planted no fields. Then what did you eat? I treated the sick. For money? No. He pushed the stones about. A serious illness cured, five apricot trees. A light one, a single tree. Why trees? — Because I couldn't ask for money. Couldn't? Half the people who came had none. If I asked for money that half would stop coming. And, and I picked up the pen: ask for a tree and anybody can pay.

What use is one tree to you? None at the time. An apricot takes five or six years to fruit. For the first five years I ate nothing. Then how did you live? There are wild fruits in the hills. You don't starve. And: hunger wasn't the hard part of those five years. What was? People asking me what I was planting them for. And: I couldn't answer. I genuinely could not answer. And: later it became a forest and everybody said I had foresight. And, five times into the book: foresight is the name it gets afterwards. And: at the time the man is holding one stone.

Then the question. Our tree costs thirteen hundred a year. What is it eating? Time; house three hangs four or five days longer for it. — And are the goods the same after those days? No. Harder. — Then it has not eaten your time. It has turned your time into something else. And: your sum counts what it consumes and not what it buys. I said the thing it buys is unsellable — customers cannot taste harder or softer; twenty-six a bag, one price for all three houses. And he said: then why keep it?

I could not answer, and sat there looking at the stones, and then got up and fetched March's sheet — three printed lines, two short strokes, an ink blot, a circle, one bar — and put it on the table. Because house three is not the same. Ten days, eleven days, fifteen days. Without the tree all three would be ten. And: three identical houses are one house. He said: go on. So: six has three inside it — you think you have learned a second thing and you have learned the same thing twice. Cut the tree and I go from three figures to one. And: those six characters were about house three's string, and that string is worth keeping because it is unlike the other two — and it is unlike them because of the tree. He nodded. Then what you have got wrong is not the thirteen hundred. And, six times into the book: you have booked a measuring stick as a year's rent.

Picking the stones back into the bag, he stopped at the last one. I didn't guard that wood either. You sold it? No. I built a thatched granary in it and put up a notice: whoever wants apricots need not come to me. Set down a measure of grain and take a measure of fruit. Nobody watching? Nobody watching. Weren't you afraid somebody would put in less? Afraid. It happened in the first year. And: but one man cannot guard a hundred thousand trees. At the door, turning: anything only you can keep safe will live exactly as long as you do. — M.

Memo to file. Chengdu, 6–14 May 2032. The elm, and a line item filed in the wrong column for three years.

1. The proposal is financially correct and I could not immediately rebut it. Cut the forty-year elm west of house three: house three drops from fifteen days to about ten, releasing four or five house-days a year, ≈¥1,300 annually, plus ¥4,000 for the timber. Roughly ¥40,000 over thirty years to a household where that is real money.

2. The error, and it is mine, three years old. I had those four or five days booked as cost — house occupancy, labour, spoilage risk. They are not cost. They are the only reason house three produces something different from houses one and two. Three houses drying identically are one sample, not three. House three's slowness is what makes its string a distinct reference — and that string is the one Abdul Rahman said not to replace. *In the book: I had booked a measuring stick as a year's rent.

3. The reframing, and it is now a permanent column. The extra days move out of cost and into a new line: this family's ruler. Same cash outflow, opposite meaning. A cost is something you work to eliminate; a ruler is something you protect from being eliminated.

4. The brother's counter, which was better than my argument. A ruler doesn't have to be a tree — build a shade structure west of house three, same shade, same four or five days, ¥3,000, and it's adjustable and removable. Engineering-wise he is right and I said so. A shade can be tuned, replicated to other houses, and taken down. A tree cannot.

5. The one thing a shade cannot do, which is the actual answer. The tree is forty years old. Every record house three has ever produced was produced under it. Replace it with a structure and the series starts over from 2032; the previous forty years no longer connect to anything. A long silence, then: I hadn't thought of that. I'll grant you that one. And, written down the same day: I handle tens of millions a year and I have never once costed the age of a thing.

6. What Alim did on the 12th, which I did not suggest and would not have thought of. He planted three saplings. One west of house one, one west of house two, and one west of house three five metres from the old elm. Asked why one and two as well: you said three identical houses are one house. And: then three identical houses with trees are also one house. And: so I planted them in different places — one due west, one south of west, one north of west. He is twenty. He has planted three different shade profiles that will not be readable as three different numbers for about forty years. He will be sixty. He did not do the arithmetic before planting.

7. The reason I keep coming back to the apricot arrangement. He asked for trees rather than money not out of vision but out of a constraint: half the people who came had no money, and asking for money would have lost that half. The forest was a by-product of a payment method chosen so that nobody would be excluded. And the honest part: for the first five years he ate nothing and could not answer anybody who asked what he was planting them for.Foresight is the name it gets afterwards. At the time the man is holding one stone. And the granary with no one watching, and the loss he accepted in year one: one man cannot guard a hundred thousand trees.Anything only you can keep safe will live exactly as long as you do.

8. Luo, 14 May, unprompted and not really about trees. I'm sixty-two. In my whole life in this trade I have never planted anything. I said he wrote the notebook. That isn't planting. That's digging myself up and laying myself out on paper. And: planting is putting something in the ground and walking away. And: people in this trade aren't good at walking away. Then, before hanging up: don't be in a hurry to answer my thirteenth question. If the answer came that fast I'd have written it in at fifty-nine.

"Those cured of a serious illness he asked to plant five apricot trees; those of a light one, a single tree."
The story is usually told as a parable about generosity, and it is more interesting than that, because the arrangement solves a specific problem and the man says so plainly. He could not charge money. Half of the people who came to him had none, and a fee would simply have removed that half from his practice.
A tree is a fee that anybody can pay. It costs a morning and a stone, and it is priced in something the poorest patient still has.
What makes the account worth keeping is that it does not present the founder as far-sighted. For the first five years there was no fruit at all, and he was living on what the hills gave him, and being asked by everyone he met what exactly he thought he was doing.
Foresight is the name it gets afterwards. At the time the man is holding one stone.
Then the ending, which is the part usually left out. When there finally was a forest — a hundred thousand trees, more than any one person could patrol — he did not hire guards. He built a granary in the middle of it and left a notice saying that anyone who wanted fruit should set down a measure of grain and help themselves, and take the fruit without reporting to him.
He was asked whether he wasn't afraid of being shorted, and did not pretend otherwise. He was afraid. It happened in the first year.
But one man cannot guard a hundred thousand trees.
Which is the calculation underneath the whole arrangement, and it applies well beyond orchards. A holding that depends on your personal supervision has a hard ceiling, and the ceiling is not money or land. It is one lifetime of attention.
Anything only you can keep safe will live exactly as long as you do.
