English Mirror: Duke Huan was reading in the hall above; Wheelwright Bian was cutting a wheel in the yard below. He put down his mallet and chisel, went up, and asked the Duke: "May I ask — the words your lordship is reading, whose are they?" The Duke said: "The words of a sage." "Is the sage alive?" "He is dead." "Then what your lordship is reading is the dregs and lees of a man of old." — The Duke said: "When I am reading, what business has a wheelwright to comment? If you have an explanation, well; if not, you die." — Wheelwright Bian said: "Your servant looks at it from his own trade. In cutting a wheel: go slow and it runs sweet but does not grip; go fast and it runs rough and will not go in. Neither slow nor fast — you get it in the hand and it answers in the heart. The mouth cannot say it. There is a measure there in between. I cannot make my own son understand it, and my son cannot receive it from me; and so at seventy years of age I am still cutting wheels in my old age. The men of old, together with what could not be handed on, are dead. And so what your lordship is reading is the dregs and lees of a man of old."

Twenty-first of May, three in the afternoon. The buying shed is four poles and a sheet of blue cloth, a platform scale and a table under it. Luo behind the table with a notebook open in front of him — new, hard covers, blue, the same kind as Chang's thirty-one, bought yesterday in the county town. Open at page one. Page one is blank. He had the pen in his hand with the cap still on.

Xiao Ma, I can't write it. Write what? This morning's first load. I looked at it and I took it. I can say why I took it. And: but the moment I write it down it isn't right any more.*

His three reasons for taking it: the man opened the top sack first; he opened it and let me feel it and stood back; and he said, unprompted, "this lot is drier than the last." I said all three are about the person. Yes. And the goods? I felt them. After I felt them I didn't know whether they're good. And: but I knew that he knows.

I bit one myself. The mark held, the edge lifted slowly, came halfway back and stopped. I wrote six characters in my own book: 回一半,停住 — comes halfway back and stops. Luo was watching. I can see what you wrote. Copying it wouldn't help me. Why not? How much is halfway?

Wheelwright Bian came at dusk when the shed was empty — seventy or so, short, a little bent, short jacket, an apron covered in wood shavings, a mallet in one hand and a chisel in the other, and calluses running unbroken from the web of the thumb to the base of the fingers. He looked at the blank page. You won't fill this one. Sir. My name's Bian. I make wheels.

The duke's hall: I was cutting a wheel in the yard; he was reading up in the hall. I put down mallet and chisel, went up and asked whose words he was reading. He said: a sage's. I asked: is the sage alive? He said: dead. And then? Then I said it. What your lordship is reading is the dregs and lees of a man of old. That is a hard thing to say. He was going to have me killed. He said: what business has a wheelwright commenting on my reading? Explain yourself and it's finished; fail, and you die.

The explanation is entirely technical. In cutting the mortise for a wheel: go slow and it runs sweet but does not grip. Go fast and it runs rough and will not go in. And the middle? Neither slow nor fast. You get it in the hand and it answers in the heart. And, and I pushed the notebook across to him: the mouth cannot say it. There is a measure there in between.

Is that measure really unsayable? It cannot be said. Perfectly matter-of-fact, no regret in it. My son learned from me for thirty years. I cannot teach it to him and he cannot take it from me. And so at seventy I am still cutting wheels. I said that is a great waste. It is not a waste. Then what is? The other thing. Which? The first two sentences I said to you. — slow and it's sweet but slack; fast and it's rough and won't seat. Those two I can say. I have said those two to my son a thousand times. And, and I copied it into the book four times: the Duke only remembered "the mouth cannot say it." Nobody remembers the two I can say.

Then he opened the blank notebook and ruled it with the chisel handle — three strokes down, two lines, three columns. Write this. First column: what it's like when it's slow. Second: what it's like when it's fast. Third — and he tapped it — blank. The middle stays blank? Blank. Leave it blank and the reader knows that part is his to fill. And: write "neither fast nor slow" in it and he thinks it's finished. Putting the chisel away, on his way out: the two ends written hard, the middle left empty. And: that is as much as can be handed on. — M.

Memo to file. Turpan, 21–25 May 2031. Luo's first purchase on his own account, and a notebook format.

1. The problem he stated on day one, which my six refusals do not solve. He can say why he accepted a load; the moment it is written down it stops being true. And on my own six characters — comes halfway back and stops — he was exact: "How much is halfway?"

2. Wheelwright Bian's correction, which is the most immediately usable thing anyone has given me since the string. The famous half of that story is the mouth cannot say it* — the untransmissible knack, the reason a man is still cutting wheels at seventy. The half nobody quotes is the two sentences that precede it: slow and it runs sweet but does not grip; fast and it runs rough and will not go in. He can name both failure modes exactly. What he cannot name is the middle. And: "the Duke only remembered the mouth-cannot-say-it part. Nobody remembers the two I can say."

3. The format, ruled with a chisel handle. Three columns: TOO EARLY / TOO LATE / (blank). The middle is deliberately empty. "Leave it blank and the reader knows that part is his to fill. Write 'neither fast nor slow' in it and he thinks it's finished."

4. Seven rows filled in two evenings, and the source of every line matters. Taking down. Early: comes back damp; moisture beads inside the bag after packing. Late: brittle; crumb at the bottom of the bag when packing. — Chang's exact words, November 2029. I wrote them down and have not used them for eighteen months. Opening vents. Early: direct sun reaches in; the row nearest the holes darkens. Late: it closes up inside; the inner row feels slightly soft. — Abdul Rahman, translated by Alim. Loading. Early: fruit still carries the day's heat and sweats in the sack overnight. Late: it takes up damp in the night and beads at the sack mouth. — Luo. Six sentences from three people. Not one of them is mine. I have kept notebooks for three years and never once recorded a pair of ends, because what I recorded was always whether a given batch passed.*

5. Row seven broke the method and then repaired it. Choosing the reference string. Left column came easily, because it is happening in house three this year: choose too good a one and next year cannot match it, and you spend the whole year thinking your own goods are poor. Right column: I could not write it. I have never seen anyone choose too poor a one. Luo: "You can't write that end. Then the row doesn't count. One end only isn't two ends — one end only is a penalty." So I telephoned Alim and asked what happens if the string is chosen too poor. Silence, then: "Nobody chooses a poor one." And if they did? Silence again, and then: "Then this year's goods come down slack. Next year's string is slacker. Slacker every year." How long? "Until it can't be sold." And: "And the year it can't be sold, people stop using the string." A nineteen-year-old derived the failure mode of a self-regenerating standard from first principles, in about eight seconds, over the phone.

6. Luo's economics, stated plainly because they are bad. 1,300 jin at an average ¥14.80 = ¥19,240. Sold to me at ¥15.20 = ¥19,760. Margin ¥520. Against seventeen days here, ¥1,500 of travel and ¥1,200 of board. Net, he is out about ¥2,200. My arithmetic; he rejected it. "Your sum is wrong. That two thousand two isn't part of this deal. That's twenty years I've owed myself."

7. The notebook now has seven pages and no owner. I said he should keep it. "And if I don't come next year?" Then who do you give it to? A pause: "Nobody. My son drives a taxi in Ürümqi." And then, pushing it an inch further towards me: "These seven pages are all apricots. In twenty years I haven't only run apricots — goji, liquorice, cumin, safflower, cistanche." And: "I have those two ends for every one of them." And: "Nobody has ever asked me."

8. Which is the size of what I have been sitting next to for three years without seeing it. Seven pages took two evenings. Five more commodities, at the same rate, is a fortnight's work — and it is a fortnight of a sixty-one-year-old's evenings, available only while he is willing to sit at that table. Standing note: the two-ends format is not mine and not his. It came from a wheelwright complaining that nobody remembers the sayable half. Everything I have built in three years — eight lines, thirteen clauses, six refusals — names one end and calls it a rule. Twenty-seven clauses, and not one pair.

"Nobody remembers the two I can say."
The story is famous for its ending. A wheelwright interrupts a duke's reading to tell him that the books of dead sages are the dregs and lees of a man of old, is threatened with execution for the impertinence, and saves himself with a description of his own trade: in cutting the mortise, go slow and it runs sweet but does not grip; go fast and it runs rough and will not go in. Neither slow nor fast — you get it in the hand and it answers in the heart. The mouth cannot say it.
It is quoted as an argument about the limits of language. I cannot make my own son understand it, and my son cannot receive it from me; and so at seventy I am still cutting wheels.
Told that this seems a waste, he said it was not, and pointed at something else in his own speech. The unsayable part is one sentence. Before it there are two sentences that are perfectly sayable, and precise, and that he had repeated to his son a thousand times. Slow: sweet but slack. Fast: rough and it will not seat.
The duke did not remember those. Nobody does.
Which turns the story from a lament into a method. What cannot be transmitted is the middle — the exact point, the measure there in between. What can be transmitted, exactly and in words, is both of the ways it goes wrong, and what each of them feels like in the hand.
Asked to demonstrate, he ruled a blank notebook page with the handle of his chisel: two strokes, three columns. What it's like when it's slow. What it's like when it's fast. And the third column he tapped and left empty.
Why not write neither fast nor slow in the middle?
Leave it blank and the reader knows that part is his to fill. Write it in and he thinks it's finished.
The two ends written hard, the middle left empty. That is as much as can be handed on.
