段一·现身
十月十一日，成都，上午九点。
马可打第一个电话之前，先写了一张卡片。
卡片上是他要说的话。
一共四句。
第一句：您好，我是那个卖葡萄干的，不是团长。
第二句：我不推销，也不要您买。
第三句：我想问一句，那一袋您打开的时候是什么样。
第四句：说不好也没有关系，我不会告诉团长是谁说的。
他把这张卡片立在电脑前面。
第一个电话打了一分十几秒。
对方是个男的，四十来岁，在开车。
他听完前三句就说：
“挺好的。”
马可说：
“谢谢您。”
挂了。
第二个电话没有人接。
第三个是个女的，在做饭，听得见抽油烟机。
她说：
“还行吧。”
马可说：
“还行是什么样？”
那头停了一下。
她说：
“就是有点粘手。”
马可问：
“您跟团长说了吗？”
她说：
“没有。”
马可问：
“为什么？”
抽油烟机的声音小了一点，像是她走开了。
她说：
“三块钱，不值当为这个跟人说话。”
马可在那张卡片旁边，添了一行字。
他写的是：三块钱，不值当。
写完他看着这六个字。
他七月把这一条挪到第一行的时候，想的是别人抄不走。
他没有想过另外一件事。
别人抄不走，是因为别人不愿意赔那三块。
买的人不来领，是因为那三块不值得他张一次嘴。
这是两个原因。
他一直只算了第一个。
第四个电话，是个二十几岁的姑娘。
她听完那四句，笑了一下。
她说：
“你们这个是真人打的？”
马可说：
“是。”
她说：
“那我说了啊。”
她说了三分多钟。
说的是袋子。
她说撕口那儿撕不开，她用剪刀。
剪完剩下的封不住。
她说她后来把葡萄干倒进了一个玻璃罐。
马可问：
“这个您为什么不跟团长说？”
她说：
“这个不算毛病吧。”
马可把这一句写在纸的最上头。
段二·古文镜像
“郑人游于乡校，以论执政。然明谓子产曰：‘毁乡校，何如？’子产曰：‘何为？夫人朝夕退而游焉，以议执政之善否。其所善者，吾则行之；其所恶者，吾则改之，是吾师也，若之何毁之？’”
“我闻忠善以损怨，不闻作威以防怨。岂不遽止？然犹防川：大决所犯，伤人必多，吾不克救也；不如小决使道，不如吾闻而药之也。”
English Mirror: The men of Zheng would gather at the village school and discuss the conduct of government. Ran Ming said to Zichan: "What if we pulled the school down?" Zichan said: "Why? Morning and evening these men come out from their work and gather there to weigh whether the government is good or bad. What they call good, I do; what they call bad, I amend. They are my teachers. Why would I pull it down?" — I have heard of lessening resentment by loyalty and good faith; I have not heard of preventing resentment by making oneself feared. Would force not stop them at once? But it is like damming a river: when a great breach comes it injures many, and I cannot save them. Better a small breach that lets it run. Better that I hear it and take it as medicine.
那天下午三点，马可打完了第十四个。
他把结果记在一张纸上。
接通的十四个。
说挺好的，七个。
说还行、还可以、没什么问题的，四个。
说了具体毛病的，三个。
三个说的都是同一件事：粘。
这三个人，一个也没有找过团长。
马可在纸的下半页写了一行：
「说『还行』的那四个，算好还是算坏？」
他看了一会儿这一行。
然后他决定回头再打一遍那四个。
这一次他换了一句问法。
他不问「怎么样」。
他问：「您那一袋，跟您以前买过的比，哪儿不一样？」
四个人里，三个说出了具体的。
一个说甜得不够。
一个说颜色发暗。
一个说底下有一小块结在一起。
马可把笔停住了。
不是他们没有意见。
是他上午那句话，问不出来。
他把这一条也写下来。
「问『怎么样』，得到的是客气。」
「问『跟以前比哪儿不一样』，得到的是观察。」
这两句写完，他想起一件很久以前的事。
在纽约做尽职调查的时候，有一次去一家做冷链的公司。
他们组问了两天，问的都是「这个环节有没有风险」。
对方回的都是「可控」。
最后一天下午，组里一个女同事换了一句。
她问的是：「上一次出事是什么时候，出的什么事？」
那一句问完，会议室里静了十几秒。
然后对方讲了四十分钟。
马可那时候二十六岁，记住的是那四十分钟。
十年以后他才明白，值钱的是前面那一句。
段三·事件主体
子产是第二天晚上来的。
十月十二号，马可打完第二十四个。
剩下三个，两个空号，一个一直不接。
他把两天的记录摊在桌上，一共五张纸。
门那边有人在。
是一个五十来岁的人，穿深色的袍子，戴一顶很正的冠。
他手里没有拿东西，站得也很稳。
他看了一眼桌上那五张纸。
他说的第一句是：
“你这两天，是在拆一样东西。”
马可说：
“先生。”
那个人说：
“子产。”
他走过来，站在桌边。
他说：
“你拆的是那个百分之二。”
那天晚上，马可先把那五张纸的结果说了。
接通二十四个。
说好的，十一个。
追问以后说出具体毛病的，十个。
明确说黏、说结块、说扔了的，三个。
退过款的，零个。
子产说：
“那一条你写在第一行的，是什么？”
马可说：
“觉得不对就退三块，不用寄回来。”
子产说：
“退给谁？”
马可说：
“我退。”
子产说：
“怎么退？”
马可停了一下。
他说：
“跟团长说，团长跟我说，我退给团长，团长退给他。”
子产没有说话。
他等着。
马可自己把话说完了。
他说：
“要经过团长。”
子产说：
“团长是谁？”
马可说：
“小区里的人。”
他说：
“有的是邻居，有的是孩子同学的妈。”
子产说了一句，马可当天在本子上抄了三遍：
“那你那三块钱，要人当着熟人说她的货不好。”
马可坐在那儿，没有立刻答。
他今天下午听到过一模一样的意思。
第十九个电话，一个女的，说得很客气。
她说：「团长挺不容易的，为三块钱不好意思。」
当时马可以为这是客套。
现在他知道这是价钱。
三块钱，换一次「当着熟人说她不好」。
这个交易谁都不做。
他把这一层写下来。
写完他抬起头。
他说：
“先生，那我另外开一条路。”
子产问：
“开在哪儿？”
马可说：
“印在袋子上。”
他说：
“一个号，直接找我，不经过团长。”
子产说：
“这个可以。”
他说：
“可是你先别急着开。”
那天晚上，子产说了乡校那件事。
他说：
“我那时候在郑国执政。”
他说：
“郑国人晚上不睡，聚在乡校里。”
马可问：
“乡校是学堂？”
子产说：
“白天是学堂。”
他说：
“晚上是他们聚着说话的地方。”
他说：
“说的都是我。”
马可问：
“说什么？”
子产说：
“说我改的那些田制，说我立的那些法。”
他说：
“大半是骂。”
他说：
“有一个叫然明的，跟我说，把乡校拆了吧。”
马可问：
“您怎么说的？”
子产说：
“我问他，为什么要拆。”
他说：
“那些人白天做完事，晚上聚在那儿议论执政的好坏。”
他说：
“他们说好的，我就做。”
他说：
“他们说不好的，我就改。”
他抬起头。
他说了一句，马可听完把笔放下了：
“是吾师也，若之何毁之。”
马可问了一句。
他说：
“先生，拆了不是更省事吗？”
子产说：
“省事。”
他说：
“拆了，第二天就没人说了。”
他说：
“岂不遽止。”
马可问：
“那为什么不拆？”
子产说：
“因为那不是没人说了。”
他说：
“那是我听不见了。”
他伸手在桌上比了一条河。
他说：
“这跟防河一样。”
他说：
“大决所犯，伤人必多，吾不克救也。”
他说：
“不如小决使道。”
马可问：
“小决是什么意思？”
子产说：
“开一道小口子，让它一直漏。”
他说：
“一直漏，就不会有一天全下来。”
他停了一下。
他说了最后半句：
“不如吾闻而药之也。”
他说：
“听见了，拿它当药吃。”
马可问了一句。
他说：
“先生，听见了不好受吧。”
子产说：
“不好受。”
他说得很平常。
他说：
“我改田制那一年，乡校里编了一句话骂我。”
马可问：
“骂什么？”
子产说：
“取我衣冠而褚之，取我田畴而伍之，孰杀子产，吾其与之。”
马可听不懂后面半句。
子产说：
“谁杀子产，我跟他一起。”
屋里静了几秒。
马可问：
“那您还是不拆？”
子产说：
“不拆。”
他说：
“三年以后，同一批人又编了一句。”
马可问：
“编的什么？”
子产说：
“我有子弟，子产诲之；我有田畴，子产殖之。”
他说：
“子产而死，谁其嗣之。”
他抬起头。
他说：
“这两句是同一批人说的。”
他说：
“中间隔了三年。”
他说了一句，马可当天在本子上抄了两遍：
“要是我第一年就拆了乡校，我只听得见第一句。”
那天晚上，子产问了马可一个很难答的。
他说：
“你那个百分之二，去年你怎么用的？”
马可说：
“我拿它跟别人比。”
他说：
“同行的退款率是百分之六七。”
他说：
“我百分之二，我觉得我做得好。”
子产说：
“他们的退款，走谁？”
马可想了一下。
他说：
“走平台。”
子产说：
“平台不认识买的人，也不认识卖的人。”
他说：
“你的走熟人。”
他抬起头。
他说了一句，马可当天在本子上抄了三遍：
“同一个数，一个量的是货，一个量的是脸。”
马可说：
“先生，那我这个数没有用了。”
子产说：
“不是没有用。”
他说：
“它量的东西，跟你以为的不一样。”
他说：
“你那两个点，是一年里有多少人肯为三块钱去为难一个熟人。”
他说：
“这个数也值钱。”
马可问：
“值在哪儿？”
子产说：
“它告诉你，你那个团长在人眼里有多重。”
他说：
“要是随便谁都肯，那你的团长就不是熟人，是店员。”
他停了一下。
他说：
“你现在开那道小口子，这个数就没有了。”
马可说：
“为什么？”
子产说：
“因为你把两样东西分开了以后，就只剩货了。”
他抬起头。
他说了一句，马可当天晚上想了很久：
“分开是对的。”
他说：
“可是你要记得，你从前那个数里，有一半是人情。”
马可问：
“先生，人情怎么量？”
子产没有直接答。
他反问了一句：
“你那八个团长，哪一个跟你时间最久？”
马可说：
“小雷。”
子产问：
“多久？”
马可说：
“两年半。”
子产问：
“这两年半，他跟你要过几次价？”
马可想了一下。
他说：
“一次。”
子产说：
“新来的那两个呢？”
马可说：
“七月来的，一个提过两次。”
子产说：
“那你就有数了。”
他说：
“不是提得多的不好。”
他说：
“是提得少的，你欠他的多。”
马可把这一句写下来的时候，笔按得很重。
因为小雷去年一年，一次也没有提过运费。
而那六块钱，是从小雷那二十个点里出的。
他说：
“人情这一半，你以后要另外找地方量。”
他说：
“你拿量脸的那个数，去比量货的那个数。”
他说：
“比了一年。”
段四·钩子结尾
十月十八号，新一批袋子印出来了。
改了两个地方。
第一个：那八条，第一条换了写法。
原来写的是「觉得不对，退三块，不用寄回来」。
现在写的是：
「觉得不对，扫这个码，我直接退你三块。」
下面一行小字：
「团长看不到，也不会知道是谁。」
这一行小字，马可改了四遍。
第一遍写的是「团长不会知道」。
他觉得这一句像在防团长。
第二遍写的是「与团长无关」。
这一句太生硬。
第三遍他写的是「不影响团长」。
这一句最像商家写的。
第四遍他写成了现在这一句。
因为买的人怕的不是团长知道有这回事。
买的人怕的是团长知道是他。
这两件事差一个字。
马可为这一个字改了四遍。
第二个改动在袋子背面。
加了一句，跟退款没有关系：
「就算不退钱，也可以只说一句哪儿不对。」
这一句是马可自己加的。
因为那两天二十四个电话里，有四个人在挂之前多说了一句。
四个人说的都不是要钱。
一个说：你们这个要是能不这么甜就好了。
一个说：我妈牙不好，能不能有小袋的。
一个说：袋子撕不开。
一个说：没什么，就是想跟你说一声。
这四句话里，马可看得最久的是最后一句。
没什么，就是想跟你说一声。
这个人不要三块钱。
这个人也没有毛病要报。
这个人只是买了一袋葡萄干，然后想说话。
马可在纸上写了一行：
「我这三年，一直在设计一条路，让人把毛病送到我这儿。」
他停了一下，写完下半句：
「我没有设计过一条路，让人只是说一句。」
他把这两行看了一遍。
然后他在旁边补了一句：
「这两条其实是同一条。」
因为只肯为毛病开的口，多半也不为毛病开。
三块钱换一次开口，太贵。
「就说一句」不要钱，反而便宜。
九月那五百一十七袋，马可让六个团长补发了一张小卡片。
卡片上就是那个码。
三周以后，数出来了。
四十一笔。
五百一十七分之四十一。
百分之七点九。
去年一年，同样的规模，两笔。
马可把这两个数并排写下来。
七点九。
零点四。
中间差二十倍。
这二十倍不是货变差了。
九月这一批和五月那一批，出自同一批晾房，同一套记录。
这二十倍是那条路改了。
四十一笔里头，写了原因的三十五笔。
说黏的，十九。
说碎的，九。
说不够甜的，七。
剩下六笔，原因那一栏填的都不是毛病。
有一个写的是：没什么，就是想说一声。
这六个人，钱退了，也收了。
其中四个，在退款以后的两周里，又下了单。
马可看着这四个人的名字，看了很久。
他在本子上写了一句：
「一百二十三块钱。」
四十一笔，一笔三块，一共一百二十三。
他还算了另外一个数。
打那二十七个电话，两天，他自己的时间。
按他给乔总报的价，一天一千六。
两天三千二。
加上一百二十三，一共三千三百二十三。
这个数买到的是：
一，那两个点量的不是货。
二，问法比问题重要。
三，十九笔说黏里，十一笔在三天雨里。
马可在这三条下面写了一句：
「三千三，比去年一整年的利润多九百。」
他停了一下，写完下半句：
「可是这三条，去年那两千四买不到。」
他停了一下，写完下半句：
「买到了我三年没买到的东西。」
那十九笔说黏的，马可当天就往下查了。
十九个人，收货日期十四天，散在成都八个区。
他先按团长分。
分不出来。
六个团长都有。
他按收货日期分。
分出来了。
十九笔里，有十一笔集中在三天。
九月二十三，二十四，二十五。
那三天成都在下雨。
马可查了那三天的快递轨迹。
三天里发出去的一共九十七件。
九十七件里，说黏的十一件。
别的十四天，四百二十件，说黏的八件。
他把这两个比例算出来。
百分之十一点三。
百分之一点九。
六倍。
马可把这两个数写下来，坐了很久。
这个不是晾房的事。
这个是路上的事。
他去年一年，一直在查晾房。
他把这一层想清楚以后，做了一件事。
他给六个团长各发了一条。
「你们小区的快递，下雨天放在哪儿？」
六个人回了六个不一样的地方。
驿站里，有空调。
门卫室旁边的架子，露天，有个雨棚。
单元门里头的地上。
便利店代收，货架最下层。
一个人回的是「不知道，我让人送上门」。
最后一个人回的是「我们小区没有地方放，快递员直接给你打电话」。
马可把这六个答案排了一下。
说黏的那十九笔，落在哪几个小区？
排出来是：雨棚三个，露天架子四个。
驿站有空调那一个，一笔也没有。
他在纸上写了一句：
「我一直以为最后一公里是运费。」
他停了一下，写完下半句：
「最后一公里是二十四小时。」
十月二十四号，马可给第七个团长打了个电话。
她姓陈。
电话打了二十六分钟。
马可先说的是那四十一笔。
陈说：
“那我那二十七个人里头有几个？”
马可说：
“三个。”
陈在那头「哦」了一声。
过了一会儿她说：
“比我想的少。”
马可说：
“陈姐，我打这个电话不是劝您留下。”
他说：
“我是想跟您要一样东西。”
陈问：
“要什么？”
马可说：
“您那张表最后一列。”
电话那头停了几秒。
陈说：
“「我记得的」那一列？”
马可说：
“对。”
他说：
“二十七行您填了六行。”
他说：
“那六行里有一行写着，这一家收货那天下大雨。”
他说：
“我照着这一行去查了。”
他说：
“那天成都下了七十毫米。”
他说：
“那一天的件，全成都有九单是我的。”
他说：
“九单里，后来说黏的，四单。”
他说：
“四比九。”
他说：
“平时是一比五十。”
陈在那头说：
“那不是雨的事吧。”
马可说：
“您说。”
陈说：
“下雨那天，快递不进小区。”
她说：
“堆在门口那个棚子底下。”
她说：
“棚子四面是漏的。”
她说：
“有的人当天不下来拿，第二天才拿。”
马可没有说话。
他在纸上写了三个字。
写的是「棚子」。
他去年在吐鲁番数过晾房的孔。
他今年在托克逊看过别人的仓库。
他从来没有去看过成都任何一个小区的快递棚。
电话那头没有声音。
马可说：
“这个我从数据库里看不出来。”
他说：
“数据库里那一天只是一个日期。”
那天电话的最后八分钟，马可说了他要办的事。
他说：
“我想请您做一件事，跟卖货没有关系。”
陈问：
“什么事？”
马可说：
“收那四十一笔，还有以后所有的。”
他说：
“每一笔后面，加一列。”
陈问：
“加什么？”
马可说：
“「我记得的」。”
他说：
“问一句就行，能问出来就写，问不出来就空着。”
陈说：
“这个能有什么用。”
马可说：
“去年有个老人跟我说过一句。”
他说：
“他说，一本没有人看的账，就是半张契。”
他说：
“我现在这本，有人记，没有人问。”
他说：
“记的是数，问出来的才是事。”
陈在那头笑了一下。
她说：
“多少钱？”
马可说：
“一个月三百。”
他说：
“我一年挣两千四，这是我出得起的。”
陈说：
“三百我不做。”
马可正要说话。
陈接着说：
“三百你还是留着退款吧。”
她说：
“这个我白做。”
她说：
“我本来就在记。”
马可说：
“陈姐，白做我不要。”
陈说：
“为什么？”
马可说：
“白做的东西，停了没有人会说。”
电话那头停了一下。
陈说：
“那你给一百。”
马可说：
“三百。”
陈说：
“一百五。”
马可说：
“三百。”
陈笑出声了。
她说：
“你这个人怎么这样。”
马可说：
“我去年跟一个老头学的。”
他说：
“他一年拿一千二，收的不是钱，是一张表。”
他说：
“我当时觉得他吃亏。”
他说：
“后来我才知道，他要的是那件事一年得办一次。”
陈那头静了几秒。
她说：
“三百就三百。”
她说：
“我这个月十五号给你第一份。”
挂电话之前，她说了最后一句。
她说：
“下个月的团，我还做。”
十一月三号，马可收到了一条微信。
是罗代办转来的。
转的是一段文字，从常那边来的。
常不用微信，是他儿子帮着发的。
一共两行。
第一行：
「今年封房是十一月二十。」
第二行：
「你来一趟，我有句话要当面说。」
马可回了三个字：「我来。」
发完他坐在那儿，想的是另外一件事。
常今年六十三。
去年那个本子上，常自己写过一句：我猜今年是最后一年。
那一句写在二〇二八年那一本的最后一页。
马可记得那一页的样子。
那一本是硬壳的，蓝色，边上磨白了。
最后一页只写了半页。
上半页是十一月十八号封房的记录。
下半页空着。
那一句写在空白的最上头，字比别处小。
旁边没有日期。
马可当时看见了，没有问。
他那时候觉得，问了就等于承认这句话可能是真的。
现在他知道，不问才是承认。
今年这一本，马可还没有看过。

附录一·Dongpo's Note
Before the first call I wrote a card and stood it against the screen. Four sentences. I'm the one who sells the raisins, not your group leader. I'm not selling anything and I don't want you to buy. I want to ask one thing: what was it like when you opened the bag. And it's all right to say something bad — I won't tell the leader who said it.
First call, a minute and ten seconds, a man of forty driving. He heard three sentences and said it's fine. Thank you. Ended. Second, no answer. Third, a woman cooking, extractor fan audible. It's all right, I suppose. What does all right mean? A pause. It's a bit sticky on the fingers. Did you tell the leader? No. Why not? The fan went quieter, as though she had stepped away. Three yuan. It isn't worth talking to somebody about.
Fourteen by three that afternoon. Seven "fine." Four "all right / no problem." Three with a specific complaint, and all three were the same complaint: sticky. None of the three had gone to the leader. And on the lower half of the page: are the four "all rights" a good outcome or a bad one? So I called those four again with a different question. Not how was it. How was it different from ones you've bought before? Three of the four produced something specific: not sweet enough; the colour was dark; a lump stuck together at the bottom. It is not that they had no view. It is that the way I asked in the morning could not reach it.
Zichan came the second night — fifty or so, dark robes, a very correct cap, nothing in his hands, standing quite still. One glance at the five sheets. These two days you have been taking something apart. And: Zichan. And, at the table's edge: what you are taking apart is that two percent.
Twenty-four reached. Eleven said fine. Ten produced a specific fault when pressed. Three said outright sticky, clumped, threw it away. Refunds claimed: zero. What does line one say? Three yuan back if it isn't right; no need to post it back. Refunded by whom? Me. How? Pause. Through the leader — she tells me, I pay her, she pays them. He said nothing and waited until I said it myself: it has to go through the leader. And who is the leader? Somebody in the compound. A neighbour. Another child's mother. And then: so your three yuan asks a person to tell an acquaintance, to her face, that her goods were bad.
I had heard exactly this at two in the afternoon, from the nineteenth call, phrased politely: the leader has a hard enough time; I'd be embarrassed, over three yuan. I had filed it as manners. It is a price. Three yuan against one instance of criticising an acquaintance to her face. Nobody takes that trade.
Then the village school. In Zheng the men didn't go home at night; they gathered at the village school. A school? By day. At night it is where they gather to talk. About me. About what? My land reforms, my statutes. Mostly abuse. A man called Ran Ming told me to pull it down. And? I asked him why. These men finish work and gather in the evening to weigh whether the government is good or bad. What they call good, I do. What they call bad, I amend. And then, and I put the pen down: they are my teachers. Why would I pull it down? Wouldn't pulling it down be simpler? Simpler. Pull it down and by tomorrow nobody is saying anything. Would force not stop them at once? Then why not? Because it is not that nobody is saying it. It is that I can no longer hear it. A river drawn on the table: when a great breach comes it injures many, and I cannot save them. Better a small breach that lets it run. What is a small breach? Cut a small opening and let it leak continuously. Leak continuously and it never all comes down on one day. And the last half: better that I hear it and take it as medicine.
And the hardest question of the night. That two percent — what did you use it for last year? I compared it. Competitors run six or seven percent; I ran two; I thought I was doing well. And whose hands do their refunds pass through? The platform's. The platform knows neither the buyer nor the seller. Yours passes through acquaintances. And then: the same number: one of them measures goods, the other measures face. You took the one that measures face and compared it against the one that measures goods. For a year. — M.
附录二·Marco's Memo
Memo to file. Chengdu, 11 October – 3 November 2029. Twenty-seven names from leader seven; twenty-four reached; two dead numbers, one no answer.
1. The question was the instrument, and my instrument was broken. — How was it? → 7 fine, 4 "all right," 3 specific. — How was it different from ones you've bought before? → 3 of those same 4 "all rights" produced a specific fault. A satisfaction question returns manners. A difference question returns observation. Every survey I have ever been handed in fifteen years asked the first kind. Standing rule: never ask a customer to evaluate. Ask them to compare.
2. Final tally on 24 calls: 11 no fault, 10 fault on the second question, 3 fault volunteered. Refund claims filed: 0.
3. Why zero, in their own words. — "Three yuan. It isn't worth talking to somebody about." (transaction cost > payout) — "The leader has a hard enough time; I'd be embarrassed." (social cost of the channel) — "I didn't know if it was meant to be like that." (the ch.165 problem again — no baseline) — "I assumed I'd spoiled it myself." The clause I moved to line one in July because no copycat would copy it is a moat that nobody crosses in either direction.
4. The two-percent error, stated plainly because it is the most expensive mistake in this memo. I benchmarked my 2% against competitors' 6–7% and read it as quality. Their refunds route through a platform that knows neither party. Mine route through a neighbour. The same number measures goods in one system and face in the other. I compared them for a year and drew comfort from the comparison.
5. The redesign, two changes on the new bags. — Line one becomes: "If it isn't right, scan this code and I'll refund you three yuan directly," with a second line in small type: "Your leader can't see it and won't know who." — On the reverse, unrelated to refunds: "Even if you don't want the money back, you can just say what was wrong." Added because four of the twenty-four said something extra before hanging up, and none of the four wanted money: less sweet would be better; my mother's teeth are bad, could you do a small bag; the bag won't tear open; nothing, I just wanted to tell you.*
6. Result, September batch (517 bags), card with the code sent out retrospectively by the six remaining leaders. Three weeks: — 41 claims = 7.9%. Prior-year equivalent: 2 claims = 0.4%. Twenty-fold. — Same drying houses, same records, same season protocol as May. The goods did not get worse. The route changed. — Reasons given on 35 of 41: sticky 19, broken 9, not sweet enough 7. The other 6 gave no fault at all; one wrote "nothing, I just wanted to say something." — Four of those six ordered again within two weeks of being refunded. — Total paid out: ¥123. Against which: the first honest defect distribution I have had in three years, and a 19-count on stickiness that now has to be traced.
7. Chen (leader seven), 26 minutes, 24 October. I did not call to keep her. I called for the last column of her spreadsheet — the one she invented herself, headed 我记得的 ("what I remember"), filled in on 6 of 27 rows. Row one of those six: "it poured with rain the day this one took delivery." I checked. 70 mm in Chengdu that day. Nine of my parcels citywide were delivered that day. Four of the nine later reported stickiness. My database holds that day as a date. Nothing in it can produce that row. I asked her to keep the column against every refund from now on — ask once, write it if it comes, leave it blank if it doesn't — and offered ¥300 a month, which is what I can afford on ¥2,444 a year. She said no: keep the three hundred for refunds, I'll do it for nothing, I was doing it anyway. She has not said whether she is staying as a leader. She did not need to.
8. What ¥123 bought. Not goodwill. A twenty-fold correction to the only quality instrument I own, plus one weather correlation, plus six people who wanted to talk and had nowhere to do it. I have been running a business for three years on a silence I was reading as a compliment.
9. Chang, via Luo, via his son (Chang doesn't use WeChat), 3 November. Two lines. "This year the houses close on the twentieth of November." "Come out. I have something to say to your face." Chang is sixty-three. On the last page of his 2028 notebook, in his own hand: "I reckon this is the last year." I have not yet read the 2029 book.
附录三·English Highlight
"Better that I hear it and take it as medicine."
The men of the state gathered in the evenings at the village school and talked about the government, which meant about him, and mostly unfavourably. An adviser proposed the obvious solution: pull the school down. The reply has survived two and a half thousand years partly because of its arithmetic. Would force not stop them at once? Yes. It would. Pull it down and by tomorrow nobody is saying anything.
And then the correction that the whole passage turns on: it is not that nobody is saying it. It is that I can no longer hear it.
He put it in hydraulic terms, which is how his contemporaries thought about anything that accumulated. It is like damming a river. When a great breach comes it injures many, and I cannot save them. Better a small breach that lets it run. A continuous leak is not a failure of the dam; it is the cheapest possible version of the flood.
The man he was speaking to had a refund clause printed as the first of eight lines on every bag he sold: three yuan back if it isn't right, no need to post it back. Two percent of buyers had claimed it in a year, and he had compared that two percent against competitors running six and seven, and concluded that his goods were good.
His refunds were paid through the group leader, who was a neighbour, or another child's mother. So your three yuan asks a person to tell an acquaintance, to her face, that her goods were bad. One buyer had already said as much and been misheard as polite: the leader has a hard enough time; I'd be embarrassed, over three yuan.
The same number: one of them measures goods, the other measures face.
The dam came down in one small place — a code on the bag, refunded directly, invisible to the leader — and the claim rate went from 0.4% to 7.9% on identical goods from identical drying houses. Nineteen said sticky. Nine said broken. Seven said not sweet enough. Six claimed the three yuan and reported no fault whatsoever, one of them writing nothing, I just wanted to say something, and four of those six ordered again within a fortnight.
The total cost of hearing all of it was one hundred and twenty-three yuan.
