English Mirror: The Empress Cao of the Great Kingdom of Khotan, consort of its sovereign, makes this offering with a single heart. — Cao Yijin took to wife a daughter of the Ganzhou Uyghur khan, and gave his own daughters to the king of Khotan and to the khan.
Dongpo's Note
Jiang rang at twenty past eight, which is half ten her time, from somewhere with a man shouting numbers behind her; she went outside. I want to say something to you. She never prefaces. A preface from her means the thing is difficult. If you're really going to do this, I don't want to only be a group leader.
Five years of group buying, and she has lost count of how many upstream suppliers she has had. I said I knew. No, you don't. Not said kindly. I didn't change them. They stopped being able to do it. Then: very few fruit people last three years. I have never met one who lasted five.
What she wants: in Chengdu, to work only with me. I said that was good news. Don't say that yet. Then, quieter: if I work only with you, I have to turn away the others. Four regular suppliers — apples, citrus, eggs, and one who does a bit of everything — and roughly seventy or eighty thousand a year of commission across them.
Against which I can currently offer her two hundred bags in March: ¥5,200 of turnover, ¥1,040 of commission. A thousand and forty against eighty thousand. I said I could not give her that. I know. And then: I'm not asking you to give it to me now. I'm asking you to promise that the Chengdu end is mine from here.
An hour with two columns. Accept: she turns away four suppliers, drops seventy or eighty thousand, and is betting five years of her own work on my surviving. Decline: she keeps four suppliers and me, everyone is safe, and my two hundred bags sit in a queue with four other people's goods — which means that if I am three days late in March, she posts somebody else's.
And the flaw in both columns, which took an hour to see: in the left-hand column only she is betting. I have put up nothing at all.
At the exhibition centre there is a light-box photograph of a donor figure from Cave 98 — a woman standing in Khotanese court dress, layer on layer, headdress absurdly high, in a red that is startling on that wall. The inscription gives her as Empress of Khotan, of the Cao family, daughter of Cao Yijin, married west in the tenth century. She is a Dunhuang woman, painted on a Dunhuang wall, wearing Khotan's clothes.
Cao Yijin was in the poplars outside the village at dusk, sixty or so, a neat round-collared robe, clean hands, nothing like Zhang Yichao's weathered face. You looked at my daughter today.
How many daughters did you marry off? Three. Where? One to Khotan. One to Ganzhou. One inside the Guiyi Army. Did they come back? Flatly: the one in Khotan, not once.
I put Jiang's proposition to him and he asked one question, which was the right one: does she want to deal only with you, or you only with her? She says she will deal only with me. That is not a marriage. What is it? That is a gift. And: when one side marries out and the other does not, the one who went across was given away for nothing.
So what were your three? I married too. Whose daughter? The Ganzhou khan's. He sent a daughter to Ganzhou and took one from Ganzhou. That is what counts. Then: a marriage is not friendship. A marriage is putting a piece of yourself inside someone else's house. Once it's in, you can't get it back.
Was it worth it? He walked a few paces in the leaves. I ruled twenty-one years. I never fought a battle. The Zhang line, from Zhang Yichao to his nephew to his grand-nephew, sixty years, came apart three times. Was that the marriages? Half. He is honest. The other half was luck.
Then, instead of a principle, three questions. How many months of goods do you have? Eight, ten with the dried. How many months is she empty? March to June. Then why are you negotiating about twelve months? And: you have nothing to marry for twelve months. You only have March. So: then marry only March.
Both sides bound; one month; one category; one year. Will that hold? It will hold. Why? Because she can afford to lose it. Can afford to lose it and still be bound? Almost word for word what An Yuanjin said about the wine: what she cannot afford, she will not agree to. And: ask for twelve months and she needs three months to think. Ask for March and she agrees tonight. What about after March? Do March properly and go back for April in April. Then, walking into the trees: my three marriages weren't made in one year either.
She agreed in twenty minutes, faster than I expected, with one condition I had not foreseen. March, I post only your dried goods. Fine. But you promise me one thing. If your goods don't arrive in March, you say so yourself. Not me. You. I put you in the group and you tell them why it isn't there.
Which is not compensation. It is An Yuanjin's three sheng of wine. It doesn't hurt. What hurts is twenty-one groups and eight thousand nine hundred people watching me say it.
And what she is actually buying with it: in five years she has never had a supplier who had a name inside her groups. — M.
Marco's Memo
Memo to file. Dunhuang, 21 November 2027. Volume three, night fourteen.
1. The proposition. Jiang offers Chengdu exclusivity: she deals only with me. She would turn away four standing suppliers representing ¥70–80k of annual commission, against ¥1,040 I can currently generate for her. The instinct is to accept gratefully. The correct reading is that it is not an offer, it is a request for a commitment I have not been asked to price — and in the version she proposed, the entire stake is hers.
2. Cao Yijin's test, and it is the whole of the chapter. Does she deal only with you, or you only with her? One-sided exclusivity is not a binding. It is a transfer. The party who gives up their alternatives has posted collateral; the party who gives up nothing holds an option. An option I did not pay for is one I will be tempted to exercise badly, and she knows it, which is why she will price it into how much she trusts me. His own arrangement was symmetric: a daughter sent to Ganzhou and a wife taken from Ganzhou. Twenty-one years without a battle, against three collapses in the Zhang line over sixty. Credited half to the marriages and half to luck, unprompted.*
3. Scope, which is the operative variable and the thing I would have got wrong. I was preparing to negotiate a twelve-month relationship because that is how such things are framed. I have nothing to offer for twelve months. I have March. Adopted, and agreed in twenty minutes: — March: Chengdu is hers alone. — March: she posts no other party's dried goods. — One year. Renegotiated next March. Both sides bound; one month; one category; one year.
4. The sizing principle, arrived at for the third time on this trip from a third direction. Why does a small binding hold better than a large one? Because she can afford to lose it — and what she cannot afford, she will not agree to. — An Yuanjin: a fine above what a member can pay does not punish him, it removes him. — Chang: a debt above what he could face did not get repaid, it removed him for ten years. — Cao Yijin: a commitment above what she can absorb does not bind her, it makes her decline. One rule: every obligation you place on a counterparty must sit below the level at which they would rather leave than perform. Above that line the instrument stops binding and starts selecting. And the commercial corollary I keep resisting: ask for twelve months and she needs three months to think. Ask for March and she agrees tonight. Speed of agreement is information about sizing.
5. Her condition, which is better designed than my side of the deal. If the goods do not arrive in March, I go into the groups and say so myself. Not her. Me. No money changes hands. Its whole force is publication before 8,900 people — the wine fine, ported into WeChat, invented independently by a woman who has never heard of the Dunhuang association documents. And what she is buying is not a deterrent. In five years she has never had an upstream supplier who had a name inside her groups. Every previous one was, from her members' point of view, simply goods that appeared. She is buying the existence of a counterparty.
6. My reciprocal move, made the same evening: put the origin on the box. Proposed printing on the March cartons: Dunhuang / Chang Yushan / house six / hung September 2027. This is ch.125's ¥0.0074 signature line, finally executed — and it has cost me nothing, because dried goods carry no batch-run penalty at all. Chang's reply is the important part. Don't write house six. The March batch came out of house two. And: if you're going to write it, write it right. Which means he knows which of six houses each of twelve annual batches came from, and he keeps it in a book. I have spent fourteen days looking for traceability infrastructure. It already exists, in a notebook, unremunerated, in a courtyard — for exactly the reason Qin's thirty years of breakage records exist and the red gift ledger exists. Everyone out here keeps books. Nobody is paid for keeping them. Nothing downstream has ever asked to see one.
7. What I have actually agreed to, stated honestly. I have one month of exclusivity from a woman whose alternative is worth ¥80,000, secured with two hundred bags of raisins and a promise to apologise in public if I fail. The asymmetry has not gone away; it has only been made small enough that she can survive my failing. Which is the correct structure, and I should not pretend it is generous. It is the largest commitment I am currently good for.
8. Open. April is the next month to marry, and the argument for it must be made in April, not now. May and June remain unsolved by anything I have found. And I should establish, before next March, what Jiang's four displaced suppliers do when they find out — I have bound one month of her calendar and given four people a reason to price me.
English Highlight
"The Empress Cao of the Great Kingdom of Khotan makes this offering with a single heart."
She stands on the wall of Cave 98 at Dunhuang in Khotanese court dress, layered, crowned with a headdress of implausible height, in a red that does not belong to any other figure in the cave. She was a Dunhuang woman, the daughter of the local governor, painted on a Dunhuang wall in another kingdom's clothes, and by the time the paint was dry she had not been home in years.
Her father married three daughters out: one to Khotan, one to the Uyghur khan at Ganzhou, one inside his own administration. Did the first ever come back? Not once.
Put to him was a proposal from a community group organiser in Chengdu, who had offered to work with one supplier exclusively and turn away four others, and he asked a single question before anything else. Does she want to deal only with you, or you only with her?
She said she would deal only with me.
That is not a marriage. That is a gift. And: when one side marries out and the other does not, the one who went across was given away for nothing.
His own arrangement had a daughter going to Ganzhou and a wife coming from it. That is what counts. And the definition, which is not a warm one: a marriage is not friendship. A marriage is putting a piece of yourself inside someone else's house. Once it is in, you cannot get it back.
Twenty-one years in office and not one battle fought, against three collapses in sixty years in the line that preceded him. Was that the marriages? Half of it. And the other half? Luck — offered without being asked.
Then, in place of any further principle, three questions. How many months of goods do you have? How many months is she empty? Then why are you negotiating about twelve months?
You have nothing to marry for twelve months. You only have March. So marry only March.
One month, one category, one year, both sides bound. Will something that small hold? It will hold. Because she can afford to lose it. And then the line that has now arrived from three unrelated directions in four days: what she cannot afford, she will not agree to.
Ask for twelve months and she needs three months to think about it. Ask for March and she agrees tonight.
