English Mirror: He enquired of them the mountains and rivers, the difficult and easy roads, the rulers and clans, the customs and produce — and compiled the Illustrated Record of the Western Regions in three scrolls.
Dongpo's Note
Pei Ju appeared beside the yard at three, in neat vermilion, holding a rolled map, and stood looking at the trucks for a long time before saying: fourteen hundred years ago I stood here looking at the same thing.
Luo, forty-six, short and thick, sleeves rolled to the forearm. He shook my hand and did not let go — turned it over and looked at the palm for about two seconds. What are you looking at? Whether you've done any work. Verdict: some; not much; in the last couple of years; not before. Which is exact. The callus is from a fortnight of thinning in April 2026 and I never built it back up.
How the trade works, delivered fast because he has said it many times. Buyer arrives, finds him, asks where the fruit is; he takes them to an orchard; deal on the spot; weigh. Three fen a jin, paid by the buyer. On a twenty-tonne load, 1,200 yuan.
So whose side are you on? He would not answer straight — asked me first, and I said whoever pays. He shook his head and gave five characters I copied out three times that night: I'm on the side of the next trip.
Unsentimental version: this buyer takes a load today, and if I let him get hurt he doesn't come back. This seller is from this village, and if I let him get hurt he gives me nothing next year. A hundred and thirty or forty trips a year, and every one of them needs both.
And then the part I had not expected. What about a one-time buyer paying well over the odds — do you take it? Yes. But: I don't take him to the households I keep. I take him to the ones whose fruit is poor this year and who probably won't come to me next year either. He said that is an ugly thing to say. It is not ugly. It is true, and it is the first honest description I have heard of how a broker allocates his own reputation.
Pei Ju administered the frontier market at Zhangye in the first years of Daye. The three scrolls are the result; the process was one word: asking. Four years there, and he never walked a single step of the western roads. He questioned over three hundred men who had.
His method, which I wrote down as four rules.
One: never ask whether the road is passable. A hundred men give a hundred answers and all of them are correct — the man on a horse, the man with camels, the man travelling with his family.
Two: ask where you set out from and on what day you reached where. That can be reconciled. Ten men say seven days from Dunhuang to Yiwu; then it is seven. If one says five, ask what he was riding.
Three: ask about water. Because whether a road is usable is not decided by the road. The distance between two waters decides how many men and how much cargo can move at one time. Which is one layer below Li Jifu's distances, and I had not got there.
Four, and it is the one that matters: he credited each man only for the stretch he had walked. A merchant from Kashgar to Dunhuang: what he says about Kashgar–Dunhuang goes in the record; what he says about Byzantium also goes in, but recorded separately, because that is hearsay. The labour of the three scrolls was not the writing. It was marking every sentence with who said it and whether he had been there.
Which is the other name for everything I have made in two years. Four pages of provenance with the year and the hand each sum passed through. Seventeen phone calls with names attached. A dispute record naming three graders and three judgements. Minutes naming who dissented. One property in common: behind every sentence stands a person.
Were the three scrolls of use? They were. They were used badly. Yangdi read them and conceived the western progress; then Tuyuhun, then the four commanderies, then everything that followed. Does he regret writing them? No — because every line in them was true. He used them wrongly.
And, walking off: in Sui I was a flatterer and in Tang I was a remonstrant. Posterity says I changed. I did not change one character. What changed was the man listening.
Luo, at dusk, on the real question. Forty thousand jin — can it be assembled? Easily. Two days. Which is far easier than I expected, until: forty thousand jin is easy. Forty thousand jin that are all the same is hard.
One orchard is uniform; a big one here does 40–50,000 jin, which is exactly the number I need. Big orchards won't deal with you — their year is sold by August, to buyers taking three and five thousand tonnes. You have three. He said it without contempt; he was quoting a figure.
Small orchards will deal. And forty thousand jin means a dozen households — different sizes, different sugar, different picking dates. A dozen households' fruit arrives in Chengdu as a dozen kinds of fruit.
Which is 9 May 2026 again: a hundred apples in ten rows, seven graders, thirty-one percent concordance. That was one man unable to be consistent. This is a dozen orchards unable to be uniform. They are the same problem: at this end, somebody has to fix what the words "grade one" mean before anything downstream can exist. — M.*
Marco's Memo
Memo to file. Zhangye / Linze, 10 November 2027. Volume three, night three.
1. The broker (代办). Luo, 46, sixteen years. Commission 0.03/jin, paid by the buyer (~1,200 on a 20 t load). Volume ~130–140 transactions a year.
His stated allegiance: "the next trip." Both sides must survive the deal or one of them is unavailable next season. This is not ethics; it is a repeated game with an explicit turn count, and he can state the count.
2. The exception, which is the informative part. He will serve a one-off buyer paying above market — but routes him to households he does not intend to use again. He allocates counterparties by his own expected future need.
Generalised: an intermediary in a market without enforcement does not have one reputation. He has a portfolio, and he spends the low-value part of it on non-repeating counterparties. Any scheme I design has to assume this, not deplore it. It also means: being classified as a repeat counterparty is itself the thing worth buying, and it is cheaper than any price concession.
Cross-reference to Guan yesterday: 0.07/jin for a fixed lane and consignee. Same mechanism, quoted in freight. Two independent operators, two trades, both pricing repetition explicitly.
3. Pei Ju's four rules for eliciting facts from people who won't lie but can't be reconciled. Adopting all four.
(a) Never ask the evaluative question ("is the road good"). All answers are true and none can be compared. (b) Ask reconcilable questions: origin, day count, destination. Ten men agreeing on seven days establishes seven days; a dissenter prompts a covariate question (what were you riding). (c) Ask about water — the binding constraint is not the route but the spacing of the constraint along it. My analogue: not distance, but the spacing of transfer points and the dock time at each. (d) Attribute every statement, and separate first-hand from hearsay. He credited each merchant only for the stretch he had walked; everything else went in a second register.
(d) is what I have been doing for two years without a name for it. The expensive part of the three scrolls was not composition. It was tagging every sentence with a source and a first-hand flag.
Action: my Xinjiang notes get two columns from tomorrow — who said it, and did he do it himself.
4. The consolidation answer, and it is not what I expected. — 40,000 jin: assembleable in two days. Volume is not the constraint. — Uniformity is the constraint. One orchard yields 40–50,000 jin and is internally uniform — but large orchards are sold out by August to 3,000–5,000 tonne buyers and will not transact three tonnes. — Small orchards will transact. 40,000 jin ≈ a dozen households, differing in size, sugar and picking date. A dozen households arrive as a dozen products.
So the corridor problem has resolved into the Luochuan problem at a larger scale: not "can we get the volume" but "can we make the volume mean one thing." 9 May 2026, 31% concordance, was the same question asked of one grader. This is it asked of twelve orchards.
Which is good news of a limited kind: it is a problem I have already solved once, at 1/40th the size, with a grading bench, a stated-reason rule and a disputed pile. Whether any of that survives without an enforcing authority is the open question of this volume.
5. Pei Ju on his own record: every line true, used to justify a westward expansion that ruined a dynasty; he does not regret writing it. And: flatterer under Sui, remonstrant under Tang, not one character changed in him — what changed was the man listening.
Filed without comment, except this: I have been assuming the quality of my material determines its effect. Two people have now told me otherwise — Wei Zheng in February 2026, and this.
6. Handshake note. He turned my palm over before speaking. The first credential examined on this trip was not a document.

"He enquired of them the mountains and rivers, the difficult and easy roads, the rulers and clans, the customs and produce."
Pei Ju spent four years administering the frontier market at Zhangye and produced three scrolls describing the routes west, and he never travelled a single stage of any of them. He questioned more than three hundred merchants who had.
His method was four rules, and they are the best short account of interviewing that exists.
Never ask whether the road is good, because a hundred men will give a hundred answers and every one will be correct: the man on horseback, the man with camels, the man travelling with his family. Ask instead where you set out and on what day you arrived, because that can be reconciled — ten men saying seven days establishes seven days, and the dissenter prompts a second question about what he was riding.
Ask about water, because whether a route is usable is not settled by the route. It is settled by the distance between two waters, which determines how many men and how much cargo can move at once.
And credit each man only for the stretch he walked. What a merchant said about the leg he had travelled went into the record; what he said about lands beyond it went into a separate register, because that was hearsay. The labour of those three scrolls was not composition. It was tagging every sentence with a source and a first-hand flag.
The broker in the yard that afternoon was running the other half of the same problem. His commission is three fen a jin, paid by the buyer, and asked whose side he is on he gave five characters: I am on the side of the next trip. A hundred and thirty deals a year, each needing a seller who will supply next season and a buyer who will return.
And, unprompted, the exception that makes it real: he will serve a one-off buyer paying over the odds — but he takes that buyer to the households he does not intend to use again. A broker without enforcement does not have a reputation. He has a portfolio, and he spends the cheap part of it on people who are not coming back.
Asked whether forty thousand jin could be assembled, he said easily, in two days. And then: forty thousand jin is easy. Forty thousand jin that are all the same is hard.
