English Mirror: Drifting, drifting — what am I like? A single gull between heaven and earth.

Dongpo's Note

Third seventeenth of October. Thirty-one three-wheelers on the apron at twenty past five; two years ago there was one, last year eleven. By noon: sixty-one households, one hundred and thirty-seven tonnes, 274,000 jin. Twenty-seven percent of a five-hundred-tonne building.

Li is seventy-three and did not carry the loudhailer. It was carried by Sun, thirty-odd — the man who objected in March to counting by last year's record, because his wife was pregnant and he could only put in half a season. His wife gave birth this year.

A single line has been on the door since 1 September: this year's ceiling is two hundred tonnes; first come, first stored, until full. I wrote it in June and it was settled in August. Two signatures under it: Wang Zhiyuan and Qiang Lei. Not mine. By 1 September I had been out of the project for forty-nine days.

Two strangers at ten, Baishui plates. Not here to store. Here to look at the book. Hou — no relation — who runs one of the two Baishui pilots, and Yue, who keeps its records. She is the one who wrote the fifth column back in by hand.

Qiang Lei received them, not me. He laid out everything: both ledgers, the position map, the dispute book, the thirteen-line work-point table, Zhou's three old volumes — and a new one, cover reading Minutes of the Twenty-Nine, started after the argument on 15 March. What was argued, what was decided, and who disagreed.

She spent longest on that one, and her first question was: do you really write the name of the person who disagreed? Yes. And does he still come? He turned to the page — 15 March, Sun, opposed, reason: wife pregnant, can only work half a season — and the later addition: Li proposed the 1981 precedent, years of illness, mourning or childbirth are excluded and reckoned by the previous normal year; Sun changed to agreement. And: he's on the door with the loudhailer today.

At half eleven, Hou asked Qiang Lei to come to Baishui. Not to live there — four or five visits a year, set up the format in year one and audit in year two. Qiang Lei looked at me. I said nothing, because it has nothing to do with me and I no longer hold any capacity in which to advise.

Then the practical problem. To pay him they need something that can issue an invoice: register as an individual trader. Fine. And: our side requires an outside technician to have a guarantor. Guaranteeing what — that the books you write are true. I'm not saying I don't trust you. You're twenty-seven and you started keeping this a year ago, and our store is built with provincial money.*

Ten months ago the person who needed a guarantor was me. Today it is him. And this time I do not even qualify to be one: foreign national, not in the project, out since 30 June. I told him so, in almost the words Hou used to me on 20 November.

He said: I don't want you as the legal one. I want a verification.

One sheet. That both storage seasons' ledgers, from 17 October 2025 to 10 February 2027, have been checked page by page by me and correspond to fact; and that if anything is untrue, the responsibility is the verifier's.

I told him my signature is worthless — no unit, no post, no qualification, and Baishui will see that at a glance. I know, he said. Then what do you want it for?

He pulled three things out of the stack. The four pages of my provenance. The eight items of 5 December. And Where It Does Not Hold. Laid them side by side, and said:

I'm not vouching with your reputation. I'm vouching with the bad things you wrote down about yourself these two years.

A year ago, in a room in Xi'an, Yu Baojia asked me which items on that wall the complaint could use, and I counted five. Those five were the things I had calculated would hurt me. Today three of them were pulled out by a twenty-seven-year-old and laid on a table to stand surety for him.

I asked whether Baishui would accept that reasoning. I don't know. But if I show them only the good ones, they'll accept it even less.

Signed at three, on the plastic table, with his pen. And I added a line he had not asked for: verifier Ma Ke, US national, no practising qualification in China, not on the project establishment, no official relationship with this project since 30 June 2027. This verification has no legal effect. Its value is limited to the verifier's own disclosures, three of which are attached.

He said I had written myself down to nothing. That line is the most valuable thing on the page — because the first thing those two will do is check who I am, and what they find has to match what I wrote.

One hundred and thirty-seven tonnes in. Sixty-one intake slips. And Zhou Jianguo's two tonnes, number thirty, a number the twenty-nine voted him on 15 March and have held for him since. He weighed them himself, signed the slip and pressed his thumbprint. He is fifty-five. It is the first time he has put his name on a fruit-storage docket since 11 May 2003 — twenty-four years.

Du Fu at ten, and he sat down, which he has done twice in this whole volume.

I turned the pass over and angled the lamp, and the eight characters came up. When were they cut? Earlier than this pass. By whom? He does not know. And: this pass has passed through my hands many times, and every man holding it turns it over only when he reaches the last field.

My answer. I had taken the sixth field to mean who will stand for me. Last October he told me it was not mine to fill and I heard wait for someone. On 20 February someone came and signed, and the field stayed empty — because "somebody stands surety for me" is that man's act, not mine.

So: the sixth field is not who will guarantee me. It is what I have that could guarantee somebody else. And what do I have? Today, nothing. No status, no post, no qualification. Three bad things I wrote down about myself. And this afternoon somebody took those three and used them to stand surety for himself.

Two years believing that a person's credit is the things he brought off. What can actually be handed over and used is the record of what he did badly.

Nine strokes. I had practised it thirty-odd times in pencil the night before on scrap paper in the sixth-floor room. Finished at 10:40. All six fields full.

And I turned it over again, and under the eight characters there is now a ninth line, equally shallow, equally old, cut by the same hand. It was not there last night.

One field is for another.

They came at eleven, not one by one but in a mass, out of the dark at the far end of the apron. Sima Qian at the back with a bamboo roll. Bai Juyi's cuff still marked with charcoal. Wang Wei beside him in white hemp. Shangguan Wan'er standing on the empty crates, higher than everyone. Du Mu, Xuanzang, Han Yu. Ban Chao, Zhang Qian, Ban Zhao, Cen Shen, Li Shangyin. Shang Yang perfectly upright; the artisan Gong Kai with clay on his hands. Sang Hongyang, Ma Yuan, Bu Shi, Deng Tong. The Famen Temple craftsman with an old scar. Jia Dao, Liu Yan, Lu Zhi, Sun Simiao, Du You, Liu Zongyuan. Gongsun Daniang in the front row with no sword. Jia Sixie, trousers filthy. Wei Zheng, Li Jifu, Yao Chong, Di Renjie, Li Mi. Song Jing, Xu Yougong, Zhang Jiuling. Yu Baojia off to one side, still holding the little file. Zhu Jia and Bao Shuya together, both looking like farmers.

Forty-odd. Nobody spoke. They stood on that apron and looked at the store for about three minutes and then they were gone. I do not think they came to look at me. They came to look at the hundred and thirty-seven tonnes.

Du Fu, leaving, at twenty past eleven: in my whole life I never obtained a pass. Chang'an to Qinzhou, Qinzhou to Tonggu, Tonggu to Chengdu, Chengdu to Kuizhou, Kuizhou to Hunan. Not one of those was a place I was supposed to go. How did he travel them? He walked. At some barriers he said he was Du of the Board of Works and they let him through. At others they did not recognise the name. And then? He went around.

And the last thing he said: yours is complete, and it is complete for the barrier clerk. Once you are through, it is a piece of bronze.

The moon was low in the west.

And there was still one man on the apron. A monk, very thin, worn brown robe, straw sandals, an enormous scripture pannier on his back. Not one of the forty. He is one of the forty — the sixty-sixth night, one of the seven guests of Chang'an, who talked about the translation bureau: ten men, one task each, one sutra through end to end.

He was waiting for me to finish cutting the character. He looked at it for five seconds and handed it back and said: complete.

So I asked which pass he had used to go west.

Ten seconds. I didn't have one.

Zhenguan one, he petitioned to travel west. Refused. Zhenguan three, famine in Chang'an, the court permitted the people to disperse in search of food, and he left the city with the refugees. At Liangzhou the governor issued a warrant ordering him back. He did not go back. He moved by night and hid by day, and at the first of the five beacon towers beyond Yumen Pass he was shot at.

He finished the sentence for me with his own eight characters: in violation of the statutes, privately to India.

Why come back at all? Nineteen years later he memorialised from Khotan, confessing that he had left the empire without authorisation, and asking to be punished. The emperor sent men to the frontier to meet him. On the day he re-entered Chang'an, several hundred thousand people stood in Zhuque Street.

Was the confession sincere? It was true. I did leave without authorisation. I went out as a criminal. And came back with six hundred and fifty-seven scriptures.

His last words, which I have copied onto the first page of the notebook: the pass you spent two years obtaining is correct. Everything you do on this plateau needs one, because what you want is for it to still be there next year.

And: there are places for which there is no pass.

He walked west. He was visible for a long time. The plateau is flat all the way to the horizon. — M.*

Marco's Memo

Memo to file. Village store, Luochuan, 17 October 2027, 05:20–23:50. Night one hundred and twenty. Sixth gate. Volume two closes.

1. Season three intake: 61 households, 137 t, 274,000 jin. Against 984 jin (season one) and 41 t (season two). 27.4% of capacity.

Ceiling: 200 t, posted 1 September, first come first stored. Drafted by me in June, adopted in August, posted with two signatures — Wang Zhiyuan and Qiang Lei. Not mine, correctly. Source of the ceiling concept: Zhou Jianguo, March, on the grounds that a store's most dangerous day is the first day it fills.

2. Qiang Lei's forecast sheet of 17 Oct 2026 — 65 names, 38 "coming," 27 "not coming," signed and dated — settled today. Of 38 predicted coming, 34 came. Of 27 predicted not coming, 19 came. Plus 8 households not on the list. He filled in the outcome column himself and did not adjust the original.

The failure mode is instructive: he was accurate about the people he knew and systematically pessimistic about the people he did not.

3. Baishui delegation. The operator and the recordkeeper of one of the other pilots. She is the person who wrote the struck fifth column back in by hand. Neither had ever met me; the format reached them by photocopy through the price group.

They asked for Qiang Lei four or five visits a year, format in year one, audit in year two — and the requirement that surfaced is the one that closes this volume: an outside technician must have a guarantor, guaranteeing that the books he writes are true.

Ten months ago the party requiring a guarantor was me. Today it is him, and I am disqualified on the same three grounds I was disqualified on then.

4. The verification. Not a legal guarantee. A one-page statement that both seasons' ledgers were checked page by page and correspond to fact, with liability on the verifier.

My objection: the signature is worthless. His answer: I am not vouching with your reputation. I am vouching with the bad things you wrote down about yourself. Three attachments — the provenance pages, the eight items of 5 December, Where It Does Not Hold.

Note the inversion precisely, because it is the finding of the volume. In November 2026 I counted five items on that wall as the material an accusation could use. Three of those five were used today as collateral. The same documents, unchanged. What changed is who picked them up.

Mechanism, stated plainly: a self-reported fault is checkable and a claimed virtue is not. A stranger can verify that I disclosed the 2,790 before anyone asked. He cannot verify that I am honest. The first is evidence; the second is a claim. Which is why the useful part of a reputation is the part that costs something to have written.

Added, unrequested: nationality, absence of qualification, date of separation, and the sentence this verification has no legal effect; its value is limited to the verifier's own disclosures. Rationale: Baishui will check who I am within a day, and what they find must match what I wrote. A verification whose first line understates the verifier is the only kind that survives being checked.

5. Zhou Jianguo, two tonnes, intake number thirty, held for him since the 15 March vote. He weighed them himself and signed and thumbprinted the slip. First signature on a fruit-storage docket since 11 May 2003. Twenty-four years.

6. Sixth gate, answered.

Error corrected: I read the sixth field as who will stand for me, and spent November to February looking for that person. He appeared and signed on 20 February and the field remained empty for eight months, because that act was his and not mine.

The reverse of the pass reads of this pass's six fields, five are your own — and after the sixth was cut, a further line appeared: one field is for another.

Answer: the sixth field is what I have that can be used to guarantee somebody else. Today the answer is: nothing but three documented failures — and those turned out to be sufficient.

Nine strokes, practised thirty times in pencil the previous night. Complete.

7. Du Fu's departure, and the line I expect to need: yours is complete, and it is complete for the barrier clerk. Once you are through, it is a piece of bronze.

He never held a pass in his life. Chang'an → Qinzhou → Tonggu → Chengdu → Kuizhou → Hunan, and not one of those was a permitted destination. At barriers that recognised his name he passed; at those that did not, he went around.

8. Xuanzang, waiting on the apron after everyone else had gone.

Zhenguan 1: petitioned to travel west, refused. Zhenguan 3: left Chang'an among famine refugees; a warrant from Liangzhou ordered him back; he travelled by night, was shot at beyond Yumen. His own eight characters: in violation of the statutes, privately to India.

Nineteen years later he memorialised from Khotan confessing the offence and asking to be punished, and was met at the frontier. Several hundred thousand people in Zhuque Street on the day he returned. He left as a criminal and came back with 657 scriptures, and he does not describe the confession as tactical — it was true.

His closing, and it is the brief for whatever comes next:

The pass you spent two years obtaining is correct. Everything you do on this plateau needs one, because what you want is for it to still be there next year.

And there are places for which there is no pass.

9. Volume two, closed. Position as of tonight:

— No status, no post, no qualification, no contract. Out since 30 June. — One handwritten sheet in a drawer with seven clauses and one signature, mine, whose only operative term is that I come at least twice a year. — One verification with no legal effect. — Six characters on a piece of bronze.

Everything that now runs at that store runs without me: the ceiling, the ledger, the grading bench, the dispute book, the work-point table, the minutes, the two tonnes, the sixty-one households. None of it carries my name, which was the stated completion criterion on 17 October 2026, and I did not expect to reach it in one year, and reaching it feels exactly as it was described: not painful, and not pleasant.

He walked west and was visible for a long time.

English Highlight

"Drifting, drifting — what am I like? A single gull between heaven and earth."
On the third seventeenth of October there were thirty-one three-wheelers outside the store at twenty past five, and sixty-one households by noon, and a hundred and thirty-seven tonnes went in. Two years earlier there had been one vehicle and nine hundred and eighty-four jin.
The notice fixing the year's ceiling at two hundred tonnes had been on the door since the first of September, over two signatures, neither of which was his. His appointment had ended on the thirtieth of June.
Two strangers arrived from the next county to look at the ledgers, and asked the twenty-seven-year-old who keeps them to come and set up theirs — and then produced the requirement that closes the story. An outside technician must have a guarantor: someone to vouch that the books he writes are true.
Ten months earlier the person who had needed a guarantor was the analyst himself, and the search had taken four months and ended with a village cadre who confessed to sabotage before he signed. Now the analyst was disqualified on exactly the grounds that had disqualified him then: foreign, unaffiliated, holding nothing.
He said his signature was worthless. The young man agreed, and pulled three documents out of the stack: the four pages disclosing where his money had come from eight years ago; the eight-item statement conceding an allegation; and a four-page assessment titled Where It Does Not Hold.
I'm not vouching with your reputation. I'm vouching with the bad things you wrote down about yourself.
A year before, those same pages had been counted as the material an anonymous complaint could use against him. Nothing about them had changed. A self-reported fault is checkable; a claimed virtue is not. A stranger can verify that a man disclosed an unflattering figure before anyone asked him for it. Nobody can verify that a man is honest. The first is evidence. The second is a request.
Which is why the part of a reputation that can actually be lent out is the part that cost something to write down.
And the guide who had walked with him for sixty nights left saying that he had never in his life obtained a travelling pass — Chang'an to Qinzhou to Tonggu to Chengdu to Kuizhou to Hunan, not one of them a place he was permitted to go, passing the barriers that recognised his name and going around the ones that did not.
Then one man remained on the apron: a monk with a scripture pannier, who had left the capital among famine refugees under a warrant for his return, travelled by night, been shot at beyond the last pass, and come back nineteen years later with six hundred and fifty-seven scriptures and a memorial confessing that he had gone without permission.
The pass you spent two years obtaining is correct, he said. Everything here needs one, because what you want is for it to still be there next year.
And there are places for which there is no pass.
