English Mirror: When the price has risen to its extreme it turns cheap; when it has fallen to its extreme it turns dear.
Dongpo's Note
Nobody came today. The mirror for this chapter is a line in fountain pen on the flyleaf of a ledger, pressed hard enough to show through the paper, dated 12 September 1998, Zhu Que market, Zhou Jianguo, aged twenty-five.
When the price has risen to its extreme it turns cheap; when it has fallen to its extreme it turns dear. Records of the Grand Historian, on merchants. He found it on a second-hand book stall outside the market and could not read most of the volume. He copied that one line because apples had gone to 1.40 that year and everyone was saying they would rise again next year. Did he not believe it? I believed it. I believed it and I was afraid.
Xianyang, a brick block from 1993, fourth floor, no air conditioning, one standing fan. A family photograph from the nineties with an old woman in the middle. And a faded apple carton on the table, which he did not open for the first ten minutes, because he wanted to say something else first.
One thing I said in your village on the tenth of February was a lie.
Three ledgers. Dark blue board covers, corners gone, a brown water stain across the first one from the top right to the middle.
1998, he leased an eight-hundred-tonne store beside the Zhu Que market. Stored two hundred tonnes. Cleared 41,300. 1999, four hundred tonnes: 110,600. 2000, six hundred: 194,000. 2001, full at eight hundred: 263,000. Four years, about six hundred thousand, at an age when a flat in Xianyang cost eighty.
From 2002 the handwriting changes. The early years are pressed hard, stroke by stroke. 2002 starts to drift. Cleared March 2002: down 82,000. Cause: Shandong glut, February collapse, storage costs unchanged. And a later line in different ink: first loss. Of thirty-nine households, six asked about the storage fee. Settled at the original terms.
Thirty-nine households. Because the third ledger opens not with accounts but with a hand-copied agreement, six characters at the top: Agreement for Fruit Held on Behalf. Dated 18 September 2001, thirty-nine signatures and thumbprints.
Sixty percent paid at market price on the day of intake. Everything above the intake price to the depositor. Anything below: the sixty percent already paid is not clawed back. Storage seven fen a jin, settled at outturn. Whoever handles it, the same terms apply.
It is my third clause. He wrote sixty percent; I wrote fifty. Twenty-five years earlier.
And it is not his either. On the preceding page, in faint pencil: August 2001, Baishui, an old man named Yang said: if you daren't stand behind it, why would anybody give you their fruit.
So the clause travelled from an old man in Baishui to a twenty-eight-year-old trader to a store door in Luochuan a quarter of a century later, with no book, no document and no training course in between — only a notebook that got rained on in a courtyard and was picked up by an old woman.
2003, six lines, and the worst handwriting in the three volumes. 19 Feb: 1.05. 26 Feb: 0.92. 4 Mar: 0.80. 11 Mar: 0.71. 19 Mar: 0.65. 27 Mar: 0.60. One month and eight days. Intake price recorded below: 1.18.
Sixty percent of 1.18 is 0.71. The market ended March at 0.60. On every jin, what he had already paid out exceeded what the fruit was worth by eleven fen — across eight hundred tonnes, 1.6 million jin.
The last page carries three lines. 11 May 2003. Thirty-nine households, paid in full. Owing: none. And smaller: I will not store fruit again.
Sixty-one thousand hundred — 610,000 down, four years' earnings gone in one and owing ten thousand more. The Xianyang flat sold that May.
Which of his three February caveats was the lie? None of them, as statements. He said: when I added those three, I was not thinking about your store. I was thinking about this ledger.
In October 2001 he told the thirty-nine that last season's depositors had made an extra 0.23 a jin, and that this year's volume would double. True. What he did not say was that the 0.23 existed because prices had risen two years running.
And: on the tenth of February he watched fifteen people crowd around a ledger and a young man report 10.9%, and he saw the expression on all our faces, and he had seen that expression in Baishui in 2001.
I told him the three caveats were not a lie. They were a debt from 2001. He said nothing for a long time, and then pushed all three volumes to the middle of the table and told Qiang Lei to come over.
Because the second volume, from the middle onward, changes format. Five columns: date / household / dispute / ruling / afterwards. Russet, grade two or ungraded, size adequate but colour short. And in the third column, what happened next — he never came back; he came six more times; three days later he learned I had graded someone else's as second, came and argued, I paid the difference, and thereafter I always asked first where colour was short.*
Five years. About four hundred entries.
I have spent three months working out how to accumulate the seven or eight recurring kinds of dispute, and calculating that one store takes three seasons to get there. Four hundred of them have been sitting in a carton for twenty-three years.
Why give them to Qiang Lei and not to me? Because you would use them. Meaning: I would write them up and file them upward, and in a few years when I am gone the write-up is a document. Give them to him and he will copy them onward.
On the bus back, ten stops of silence, and then: he was twenty-eight that year. I am twenty-six. And: what if the price collapses again this winter?
I did not say it would not. I said: then we write one line on the last page. Date. Paid in full. Owing: none.
Three stops later, Cui's message. Zheng loses the division directorship next week, reassigned to a non-leadership grade, effective 1 September.
In the mutton-soup house on 18 February he said he had three years. That was one hundred and seventy-nine days ago. — M.*
Marco's Memo
Memo to file. Xianyang, 16 August, 15:00–19:00. Night one hundred and eight. No visitation.
1. Counterparty history, disclosed voluntarily and in full, with primary documents.
Zhou Jianguo leased an 800-tonne store adjacent to Xi'an's Zhu Que market from 1998. Five seasons.
— 1998: 200 t, net +41,300 — 1999: 400 t, net +110,600 — 2000: 600 t, net +194,000 — 2001: 800 t (full), net +263,000 — 2002: 800 t, net −82,000 (Shandong glut, February price collapse, storage cost fixed) — 2003: 800 t, net −610,000
Cumulative through 2001: ~609,000, against a Xianyang flat at 80,000. Wiped out in one season plus ~10,000 owing. Flat sold May 2003.
2. The 2001 agreement. Thirty-nine households, hand-copied, thirty-nine signatures and thumbprints, dated 18 Sept 2001. Five clauses: 60% of market value paid at intake; upside entirely to the depositor; downside — the 60% already paid is not clawed back; storage 0.07/jin at outturn; same terms regardless of who administers.
This is my clause three, written twenty-five years before me, at 60% instead of 50%.
And its origin is recorded in pencil on the preceding page: an unnamed old man surnamed Yang, Baishui, August 2001 — if you daren't stand behind it, why would anybody give you their fruit.
Note for the record, against my own vanity: I did not invent the instrument. I re-derived it, and the transmission chain that reached me ran through a notebook that was thrown away and retrieved from a courtyard by an illiterate woman.
3. The 2003 sequence, six entries: 19 Feb 1.05 / 26 Feb 0.92 / 4 Mar 0.80 / 11 Mar 0.71 / 19 Mar 0.65 / 27 Mar 0.60. Intake 1.18, so 60% paid = 0.71. Terminal market 0.60. Negative carry of 0.11/jin on 1.6m jin before storage cost.
Last page: 11 May 2003 / thirty-nine households paid in full / owing: none / I will not store fruit again.
Structural observation: the instrument worked exactly as designed. Clause three transfers tail risk from thirty-nine households to one balance sheet, and one balance sheet is not large enough to hold a systemic price collapse. My version has the same defect and I have known it since October without stating it this plainly. My 452 was survivable because our volume was 984 jin. At 800 tonnes it is not.
This is the argument the provincial legal affairs office was making, badly, when they diluted clause three to 30%. They were not wrong about the risk. They were wrong about who should hold it — the answer is neither the household nor a single operator, and I do not yet have a third answer.
4. The correction to 10 February. He characterised his three on-camera caveats as a lie, which they are not as statements. What he meant: he issued them out of his own 2001 debt, not out of an assessment of our store.
In October 2001 he told thirty-nine households that last season's depositors gained 0.23/jin and volume would double. True, and materially incomplete: the 0.23 was the product of two consecutive rising years. He reported the realised return without reporting the regime that produced it.
Which is precisely the error I made in a published research note eight years ago and spent eleven days tracing in November — reporting a true number without reporting what the number was buying. Third instance this year of the same failure mode, in three different people. It is not a character flaw. It is what happens by default when you report outcomes rather than mechanisms.
5. Asset acquired: ~400 dispute rulings, five seasons, five columns — date / household / dispute / ruling / what happened afterwards.
The fifth column is the one nobody builds. He never came back. He came six more times. He learned I graded another man's as second, argued, I paid the difference, and thereafter I always asked first. That column is the outcome data on the ruling, which is exactly Di Renjie's "no one came back" applied at the level of a single trader.
I had budgeted three seasons to accumulate this. It has existed for twenty-three years in a cardboard box.
6. His reason for giving them to Qiang Lei rather than me, and I am recording it because it is a criticism and it is correct: I would write them up and file them upward, and the write-up would become a document that dies when I leave. He will copy them onward.
Restating: a synthesis is a snapshot of an author; a copied-forward record is a practice. I have been producing the first kind all year and calling it institution-building.
7. Qiang Lei on the bus: what if the price collapses this winter. Answer given: then we write one line on the last page — date, paid in full, owing none.
I should be honest in this file about what that answer costs. At our current volume it costs me perhaps two thousand yuan. It cost him six hundred and ten thousand and a flat. The answer is easy for me to give and I should not mistake giving it for having been tested.
8. 22:40, message from Cui: Zheng removed as division director next week, reassigned to first-class investigator grade, effective 1 September.
On 18 February he stated he had three years. Elapsed: 179 days.
Exposure check, immediately: — The five-pilot designation: issued, in a document. Survives. — Two-county concentration: in the siting decision. Survives. — Operating line, ¥80,000/store/year: in the budget. Survives to the extent the budget survives. — The eight-kilometre column: a reported, non-assessed field on an acceptance form. Fragile. — Clause nine, ledger format, blank final page: mine, in the appointment annex. Survives. — Everything Zheng agreed by hand and by his own signature on a napkin-grade sheet of paper in a mutton-soup house: unknown.
He told me in February to ask everything I needed to ask while he was still there. I asked about the pilots and the money. I did not ask him who would carry this after him.
Xi'an. Tomorrow if he will see me.
English Highlight
"When the price has risen to its extreme it turns cheap; when it has fallen to its extreme it turns dear."
A twenty-five-year-old fruit trader copied that line onto the flyleaf of a new ledger in September 1998, having found it on a second-hand book stall outside the market. He could not read most of the volume it came from. He copied that sentence because apples had gone to 1.40 that year and everyone was saying they would rise again — and, in his words, I believed it, and I was afraid.
Four seasons later he had cleared about six hundred thousand yuan, at a time when a flat in that city cost eighty. In the fifth season he lost six hundred and ten thousand in fourteen weeks and sold the flat.
What made the loss that size was a clause he had written into an agreement with thirty-nine households: sixty percent of market value paid on intake, all upside to the depositor, and anything below the intake price is not clawed back. He honoured it. The last page of the ledger reads: paid in full; owing: none; and then, smaller, I will not store fruit again.
The clause was not his invention either. In faint pencil on the preceding page: an old man surnamed Yang, Baishui, August 2001 — if you daren't stand behind it, why would anybody give you their fruit.
So it travelled from an unnamed farmer to a young trader to a village store door a quarter of a century later, with no book, no document and no training course anywhere in the chain — only a notebook that was thrown into a courtyard when the business failed and picked up by the trader's mother, who could read a few characters and could not read the ledger, and who said: you wrote in it for five years, so it is not waste paper.
And the instrument worked exactly as designed, which is the uncomfortable part. Such a clause transfers tail risk from thirty-nine households onto one balance sheet, and one balance sheet cannot hold a systemic collapse. The bureaucrats who diluted the modern version of it were not wrong about the risk. They were wrong about where it should sit — and nobody in this story yet has a third answer.
